Wondering if I should install tumbleweed or stable on new build

Hi, I just builed a new computer and I would like to know if tumbleweed is stable enough to use as a daily driver. I have used Linux mint for years and I decided to switch to opensuse now and I would love the rolling release. On the other hand I don’t want something unstable. I would also like to know How difficult is it to upgrade from stable to stable? Please advise

Thanks

What operating systems if any have you tried so far on the new machine? Some hardware details might help.

I would give the latest tumleweed a go. Running fine here and the packages are so much more up-todate than 13.2 (which was only released in October last year but things change so quickly in the world of linux).

I am running an amd card Intel i7 processor and I am planning to load this on a ssd. I have tried Alot of Ubuntu based distressed. Tried fedora also. I have been playing with the gnome flavor of opensuse on a virtual machine and I like it.

Tumbleweed running KDE has been impressively stable here for several months, but I can’t say either way for Gnome or SSD.

With Tumbleweed, be prepared for lots of frequent updates, so a fast broadband with high monthly allowance is really needed as some updates are several hundred MB at a time.

By default both Tumbleweed and 13.2 (stable) install Btrfs and Snapper for the root partition, but you can change that in the installer. If you go with the default, you will immediately get snapshots that will significantly increase your disk storage over time, while doing any maintenance with YaST and or software management with zypper including updates. Therefore you need to read the openSUSE documentation about managing and cleaning up snapshots, and make sure you estimate appropriate partition sizes.

Someone else might like to to comment on SSD considerations for Btrfs and snapshots, etc.

Thanks everyone. I think I will go with the tumbleweed distro give it a try and see. I hope that I wont have any gpu driver issues with it. Also can anyone explain why should I go with btrfs for an ssd drive. Or should I go with something else? Also is 120 go ssd enough for this? And what are the maintenance required to keep everything smooth? (in Ubuntu I never did any snapshot cleaning)

Here are some links which might help answer your questions;

SSD performance: A bit dated but still has useful information.

btrfs mount options: Note some options are specific to ssd’s.

snapper FAQ: You can limit the number of snapshots collected (avoid the out of space problem).
