Wireless Woes, Sees network but wont Connect

After several hours of reading these forums I managed to get the wireless card to see the network but not connect, I hve tried enabling WEP, WPA and no network. None of it allows me to connect. I have tried using newtwork manager or the old classic method. I have done the install of the bmc43 firmware.

After reading the wireless primer here are the results, I even deleted and let it reload the card.

What shows up with the command ‘dmesg | grep b43’?

After it fails to connect, post the last few lines of the output of dmesg.

There are some laptops that contain BCM4306 cards with RFKILL buttons
that do not generate a scan code. If you have one of these, you will
need 2.6.27.

Larry

Couple of things I forgot. This is versoin 11, Also this is nto a laptop but destop with PCI Motorola Wireless Card.

dmesg | grep b43 returns

Broadcom 4306 wlan found
b43-phy0 loading firmware version 410.2160
registered led device: b43-phy0::tx
registered led device: b43-phy0::rx
registered led device: b43-phy0::radio

Your card does not have the RFKILL switch problem. You only need to
configure the connection (ESSID, encryption parameters) and it should
work.

Hi all, i have acer aspire 5920 CHPSET Intel
WiFi Card Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection
on windows Wifi Works, in Ubuntu Works and yestrday :slight_smile: i reinstaled my PC and installed OpenSuse 11.0 so my wifi connection sometime detect others wifi connections but not my Router(D-Link DIR-625) and not my name of connection please HELP US .
im not frist persone who have this big problem :slight_smile: (for me its big) 5 h i worked for doit something but nothing, im tired but i like opensuse . please what i need to do ? THNX . my laptom have buton for enable/disable WiFi and in openSuse don’t work no lights, so someone who knows something please write to easy because im new user and im not expert, THNX. Denis

Instead of hijacking someone’s thread with a totally unrelated problem, why not start your own. & Have you read the stickies ? Also, please do not double post, other has been deleted

Andy

I have configured it 15 times and it doesnt work, what am I missing. I have configured it for no security , I have configured it for WEP I have configured it for WPA and none will connect.Each time I changed teh Router I first ensured my laptop would connect so I know it was configured correct on the Router side. I have even clicked the little globe in the task bar and done it by saying new connection and still no dice. I am using YAST to configure the card so I assume that is what you mean by configure the card. I am stuck and dont know where to go next. Thanks

have you tried changing the channel on the router ? sometimes interference can stop connections. Changing the channel sometimes helps

Andy

I can connect with my laptop in windows sitting right beside it, it finds the network but wont connect, I will try it and see if it does anything

I tried changing the channel, for some reason if I do a dhclient command it tells me that no leases were offered even though it see the router and other devices can connect. Also when it is trying to connect, if I do a iwevent it looks like it scans timesout and then does it all over again.

any more help or am I doomed to go back to MS?

Did I read the thread correctly and you have a BCM4306? Does it have a
switch to turn off the radio? If so, is it on?

Does ‘sudo /usr/sbin/iwlist scan’ show any networks?

What does ‘dmesg | grep wlan0’ show?

The other thing is that it is much easier to configure a connection
with NetworkManager than it is with YaST.

Larry

Yes openSuSE identified it as BCM4306. I did everything you said and posted the responses, you yourself said I dont have the rfkill problem as was pointed out this is a desktop pc not a laptop. I have posted the results of each of the things you mentioned already as we have already done them with the exception of ‘dmesg | grep wlan0’ . I will try it and let you know. we did do a ‘dmesg | grep b43’ and here was you last post after looking at all the results from those.

Your card does not have the RFKILL switch problem. You only need to
configure the connection (ESSID, encryption parameters) and it should
work.

As to yast verses networkmanager comment I agree as I have tried it both ways many times and even tried switching to ifup and still get the same results. It finds the network fine, the problem appears that DHCP is not working on this device. If I do a dhclient it comes back saying no dhcp offered. The problem seems to be related to DHCP not working ( it is using dchpcd and dhcp works fine with eth0), I did try configuring it statically but still it didnt work.

The Card itself is the Motorola PCI Card WPCI810G

Here are the results from dmesg | grep wlan0

Thanks for the help

Some versions of the BCM4306 have a problem that has been fixed in
later kernels. To see if yours is one of them, we will need to do a
fairly complicated set of commands. It will be best if you copy and paste.

SPROM=$(find /sys -name ssb_sprom)
echo $SPROM
sudo cat $SPROM

Post the output of those three commands.

Larry

it seems like maybe the driver isnt correct for the PCI card.

Girls-PC:/home/ray # SPROM=$(find /sys -name ssb_sprom)

Girls-PC:/home/ray # echo $SPROM

bbullins wrote:

A number of the PCI versions of the BCM4306 have a programming error
in the SPROM. None of the developers have cards with this problem, and
it was not discovered until relatively recently.

Copy and paste the string below into a file named sprom.new.

014000001070571020430080020002000010001800000000FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF0F001E66DC29FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF4516A01277FBACFEFFFFFFFF3C000000000000003E000C00FFFF0000000000000000015A

Next, run the following set of commands:

SPROM=$(find /sys -name ssb_sprom)
echo $SPROM
sudo cp sprom.new $SPROM

That will correct the programming error.

One other thing, please run the command ‘/sbin/lspci -nnv’ and send me
the first two lines of the section that describes your BCM4306. That
will tell me if your card is one that we have seen before, or if we
still need to change the driver.

Larry

**When I copy and paste the commands it comes back saying

cp: writing ‘/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:07.0/ssb_sprom’ : Invalid argument

Here are the results from the last command

Perhaps the forum is messing up the stuff I’m sending. Please send me
a PM with your email and I’ll send you the file.

Larry

Even though it gave me the invalid argument error in the previous post when I do a sudo cat $SPROM it now shows the last 5 digits changed to 0016E even after reboot, however nothing seems to have changed in regards to the wireless not working.
