I installed rt2860 via ndiswrapper - modprobe
setup wireless via internet devices and set host name and key.
Connection shows up in network manager but will not connect.
I guess I should mention that I am doing this from live cd, no wired connection.

It can be a lot of things. Check the logs to see if you can get the real reason why it is failing. Probably, the most important files are
/var/log/messages
/var/log/NetworkManager
You must be root to read those files.
I’m no expert, but based on my experience there may be a security issue. I’ve had success using 128 bit WEP (in both YaST and the router) and NetworkManager on OpenSuSE 11.0.
