Wireless was here... and gone

Hello,

I have only just got my first netbook and when I first installed 11.2 on it it would detect local networks and ask if I wanted to use any of them. Since they belonged to other people and I use a wired connection at home, I declined.

I then took my netbook on travels and tried to connect to freely available networks there, but to my surprise it no longer detected them. I tried to go through YAsT and see what needs to be changed but no matter what I tried the wireless option was never offered again.

I have now come back and decided to get to the bottom of this. Here is what I get from iwlist scan:
lo Interface doesn’t support scanning
eth0 Interface doesn’t support scanning

Also, from iwconfig I get:
lo no wireless extensions
eth0 no wireless extensions

It is as if there has never been a wireless capability. Can anyone advise on what to do to fix this?

Thanks,

Abe

Please post result of

/sbin/lspci -nnk

To me, it looks as if no driver is installed for your wireless. As our crystal
balls are broken, we are unable to figure out your system until you provide a
lot more information.

If your wireless is connected to a PCI bus, you should post the output of the
command

/sbin/lspci -nnk

If it is a USB device, please post the output of

/usr/sbin/lsusb

For the latter, you may have to install the usbutils package.

Thanks. I appreciate that you can not figure things out without information, but I did not know what information to look for.
Here is the output from /sbin/lspci -nnk:

I think this device is your wireless. As you notice, it has no driver loaded.
I’m asking the Atheros people on the linux-wireless mailing list to see what
they know about it. I’ll let you know what they say.

Are you really sure that your wireless once worked? The reason I asked is that
the Atheros developers say “this adapter shall be supported by the ath9k.”

They are aware that it is not supported and are working toward having a driver
for the device.

The only way to make that device work in the near future is to use ndiswrapper
and a Windows driver.

Thanks for doing the research for me. I am quite sure that it did work, at least as far as automatically detedting available wireless networks. I had a small icon on the panel and after I declined joining networks for the first time it became greyed out and the tool tip over it suggested no networks were available. Now that icon is no longer there. Is it possible that a different device was involved?

Thanks,

Abe.

I just got a second response from them. Apparently, it is a legacy 802.11b/g
device that may be supported. Try the following:

sudo /sbin/modprobe -v ath9k
sudo echo "1a3b:1112" > /sys//bus/pci/drivers/ath9k/new_id
/usr/sbin/iwconfig
sudo /usr/sbin/iwlist scan

If they are right, that sequence should get you a wireless device. If it works,
then a modification will need to be made in the kernel.

I tried the sequence of commands but the echo fails with the error:
echo: write error: Invalid argument

The permissions of the new_id file are --w------, but the write error persists even if I do chmod 777.

It is not clear to me why this is happening.

Thanks,

Abe

These are not really files, thus changing the permissions doesn’t work.

I got the syntax a little wrong. There should be a space, not a colon between
the two numbers. In addition, doing the echo with sudo does not work,

Use this code sequence:

su -
modprobe -v ath9k
echo "1a3b 1112" > /sys//bus/pci/drivers/ath9k/new_id
iwconfig
/usr/sbin/iwlist scan
exit

Thanks - the echo works fine now, but the end result of the sequence of commands is:

>iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions

eth0 no wireless extensions

> iwlist scan
lo interface doesn’t support scanning

eth0 interface doesn’t support scanning

So it looks like I am back in square 1. I will try a usb bluetooth dongle next.

Thanks,

Abe
