Wireless USB adapter switching off

My USB WiFi N adapter Asus N-53 goes off periodically, apparently when the laptop is inactive. If I move the pointer using the touchpad, then the adapter turns on again. I need it to stay on because I often connect remotely to the laptop.

I tried to inspect the WiFi configuration from the top right icon in the panel, but I was stopped by a different problem: the administrator password is rejected. (Does a user need to be in some spedific group to be able to elevate its privileges for configuring WiFi?) Is there any setting that is relevant to my problem above in the configuration window?

Running openSUSE 13.1 on Asus EeePc 1101HA, upgraded from 12.2 and 12.3. The output of lsusb follows.
