Let me start by saying that with the previous kernel 2.6.31.5 when I opened network configuration, it didnt even recognize my card when i’d go to modules. After I updated to 2.6.31.8 it didnt recognize it until I installed the ralink-firmware 1.1.3.5. After that I could configure it using rt2870sta setting in modules. But once I restarted it would freeze after a few seconds after I could see the desktop on startup. I reconfigured the card to be ‘manually’ powered, but now it just freezes when I click on the access point I want to connect to. When it freezes the caps lock and scroll lock start blinking and the only way to turn off is holding the power

2.6.31.8 has a known bug that causes this problem with rt2860 and rt2870
devices. These devices are reported to work with 2.6.31.5. Downgrade your kernel.
when I downgrade my kernel I dont have an option in the modules section, like it doesnt recognize it. with the new kernel I actually can see that my wireless card is scanning. I got this card working on ubuntu back in november, but have since moved to opensuse for a class im taking. Ive read a bunch about blacklisting and installing the drivers, but I cant seem to get it working on suse due to the fact that I cant seem to gather the instructions in an organized fashion.

The rt2870 driver in the 2.6.31.5 kernel should work. You should not have to
blacklist or install anything.
hmm. so should a reinstall work? Im installing over http using my wired connection, will this affect anything? should I have the dongle plugged in the whole time?

You should have all the hardware plugged in when you do the install, but a
reinstall should not be necessary.
Please post the output of ‘hwinfo --wlan’ and ‘lsmod’, or go to

I don’t see any reason for you to not see a scan.
Perhaps you should go to
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/Kernel:/HEAD/openSUSE_Factory/i586/
and download
kernel-default-2.6.33-rc6.6.1.i586.rpm
Install this with
sudo rpm -iv kernel-default-2.6.33-rc6.6.1.i586.rpm
This way you will have both the 2.6.31 and the 2.6.33 kernels available.
why is it trying to use rt2800 when it should be rt2870 or rt3070?

Good catch. It should be rt2860. Those USB IDs (1737:0077) are listed for both
the rt2800usb and rt2860 drivers. Does your device work if you do the following?
sudo /sbin/modprobe -rv rt2800usb
sudo /sbin/modprobe -v rt2860
If that allows it to work, then you will need to blacklist rt2800usb by adding
the line
blacklist rt2800usb
to the bottom of /etc/modprobe.d/50-blacklist.conf
now im looking at 2860? the last time i got it working on ubuntu i used the 3070 drivers. Windows uses 2870. when I blacklist rt2800 it doesnt give me another option to use when selecting the module.
THANKS SOO MUCH!
once I added the other kernel i restarted and was given the option of rt2870sta or rt2800usb under modules. i selected rt2870sta saved and am now writing this using my wireless connection. Are there any updates that I should avoid?

The problem with 2.6.31.8 was introduced by Novell, and was not in the mainline
kernels. I am having zero problems with the 2.6.33-rc6 kernel, and I would
expect none for you. In addition, any kernel updates in openSUSE 11.2 will be
for 2.6.31. The change to 2.6.33 will occur with 11.3.
so I should only log into the new kernel? can I get rid of the old?

I would keep the old one around, but modify GRUB to boot the new one by default.
I almost never boot the openSUSE kernel version as I do testing of not yet
released kernels, but I keep theirs around just in case.
Note: You boot a kernel, not log into it. You log into a desktop.
ya I know, just meant that at grub I now have 2 opensuses, 2 failsafe opensuse, and 2 for my windows partitions. Ill clear it up later. thanks
BTW: what changed in the kernel that makes my card work?

Progress. Between 2.6.31 and 2.6 33 have been a lot of changes. As I do not
follow the rt28X0 drivers, I could not point to any specific change; however,
when a vendor driver is placed in staging, there are usually a lot of changes
that follow.

It is not a wireless problem.
