Wireless Range Expander

Hi all

Looking for some advice.

My Netgear Router is quite new (802.11n) but the walls in my house are pretty think and I can’t get a signal very far from the router.

I have an old range expander which has given up the ghost. Can anyone suggest a suitable replacement which will give me a good solution? I have tried an ethernet connection via the house’s power supply, but for some reason, not every power socket works. Anyone know why that should be?

I’ve seen a Netgear power socket wireless range adapter (it’s a device which plugs into a power socket and transmits a wireless signal taken from a similar plug connected to the router). Anyone got any thoughts on this?

Do a google search for parabolic wifi antennas. You will come up with a lot of do-it-yourself options. Years ago, I built one with a square of aluminum and some Styrofoam that actually worked! They will work on both transmitters and receivers. Only problem is they make the signal directional. So, they are better on the receiving end. This might be pretty awkward for a laptop but for a desktop at the other end of the house, you should be good to go.

You could also try an Alfa AWUSB36H (802.11b/g) or AWUSB36NHR (802.11b/g/n).
Some models even come with directional antennas as well. The price on E-bay
ranges from $30-40.

Using ethernet over the mains wiring is pretty slow, and subject to the quality
of the wiring in the house. A lack of interconnecting ground connections may be
the reason for some outlets not working.

In general, I do not like repeaters as they limit the transmission to 1/2 the
bandwidth that would otherwise be available.
