wireless problem

Hi All
I just installed 12.3 from the DVD all went ok untill i try to get internet …I only have wireless access here due to living a fair way from civilization and the cost of cabeling so we have cable to a hub for all on our land…

I have been trying anything and everything to get connected but it keeps telling me there are no wireless connections available which is ok apart from im using the wireless now on an open suse 12.3 gnome live cd which i didnt install as i didnt like gnome.

so the big question is why does the live cd find my network with ease yet the DVD installation wont

and how can i fix it. as its getting tiresome keep re booting typing in passwords etc etc every time i want to read some more info or try something else.

PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection
MAC : 00:1c:bf:33:07:f7
BusID : 0000:0c:00.0
• Device Name: wlan0
• Started automatically at boot
• IP address assigned using DHCP

thats the readout from the network settings overview on my live cd version…i think it looks the same in the installed vversion

and now ive been at it so long im forgetting what i have done…

sadly this is the only distro i have tried that has failed to find my wireless and i have tried most of the main ones and a lot of others…

Hi
Has the package kernel-firmware installed? Also check the output from the dmesg command for more details.

there is both a networking and wireless sub-forum here…the
wireless one has three stickies at the top, one of those usually gets
folks going…EXCEPT the very first thing you should do (since there
is a known problem with 12.3) is to read the release notes which are
available from a link on the download page, here:
http://software.opensuse.org/

if what it says in there about networking is not enough you might
look through the dozens and dozens of recent network problems with
12.3 in either or both of these

http://tinyurl.com/4lq2s9z
http://tinyurl.com/4nk8692

if that doesn’t work you will need to post to the wireless forum
including the specific information required by the helpers
there–that info is explained in one or all of those three stickies…

OH WELL im really sorry for posting in the wrong forum…but as this happened at the first install i thought maybe that was what was wrong sorry for not being a total expert…i also read a lot of stuff which didnt do much apart from have me boot a live disc boot the system boot the live disc boot the system for about 5 hrs… so i thought maybe id ask someone to save wasteing more time but hey i guess i should have took computer science rather than play rugby and climb mountains etc then id not need to bother anyone… i need a computer that works regularly not having 5 hrs of messing about reading stuff which has little or no relevence and considering the live CD booted and ran from the outset it was strange the installed version did nothing… but now i know its best to use another distro where the forums are friendlier thanks to the other guy for the suggestion

And I am really sorry that you found the advice unfriendly. I saw those as
helpful suggestions. No Linux distro will spoon feed you the way Winblow$ does,
but you paid dearly for that spoon feeding. The cost was not only in the
original purchase price, but also in the original design with no real security.
That leaves you open to viruses and all sorts of malware.

Whatever distro works for you is best.

Some how i dont find being given dozens and dozens of things to read most of which are not even close to addressing the problem or which i have much understanding about.

I used a live CD everything worked perfectly…I installed the system (with a different desktop) using EXACTLY the same settings NO network ???

is this something that should be given as information to people using a live CD. and that they then have to figure out for themselves or read Dozens of technical details which to a beginner in Linux will probably seem like Coyaima.

You seem to assume i was a windows person and that i need spoon feeding I have as have most people HAD to use Widows and was quite happy with it problems were easy to solve and i never had a virus and maybe only 2 or 3 spyware type of problems again easily remedied. almost since the start of Live CDs i have tried and used many different distros again with little or no problems, and am still using a sabayon OS which is about 7 years old

Many people who have tried to change to Linux have been put off by the attitude of superiority from any help forums they tried… this has recently been addressed or inferred though it seems the old ideas are still apparent

so its small wonder why people who want to be rid of Windows wont turn to linux as most dont have computer science degrees to understand all the bash scripts, coding and command line things they need to understand or have the time to spend reading dozens of articles to try and get the OS to work when all they want is a basic machine to switch on use the internet and use a WP …no wonder they stay on Windows at least there is always plenty of easy to understand help available and plenty of the same free software that LINUX uses…

for information …for whatever reason my network manager power meter suddenly appeared 1 day later when i was trying out the audio player though it was too late and now Open suse has been removed never to grace my machine again …whats the point if the Help forums can’t help. and would rather you uninstall than support.

Have a nice easter if its still on in your time zone…

There is a problem yes. the fix is pretty simple if you read the references.

The best is the first post in this area.

Ther is not a simple prress this button because it depends on the situation ie desktop cards and and combination of connections etc.

I agree that it is a hassle for thise that refuse to read and we hope it will be corrected in the next release but that is how it is for this release.

We are just users here helping users.

i find the inability to be thankful for free software and graciously
accept help freely given by volunteer fellow users as offensive.

I hope he is better at rugby than he is at computers or human relations. As
rugby is such a violent sport, that may be the source of the problem.

I wish the support personnel at his new distro of choice the best of luck.

One thing that may help opensuse 12.3 has a bug that after a fresh install the network indicator dosent show. All you need to do to fix this is reboot the computer then the network indicator will be there as normal and you can set up your wireless connection. Hope this helps you out.

Another one is that the installation will allow you to configure the
network, and do so using ifup. But when the system starts, it is
configured to use network manager instead (and the applet is not
started). So no network.

You have to reboot, then enter again the network configuration in NM. Or
tell yast to use ifup instead, which is configured.

It is certainly not nice at all.
