Wireless problem RTL8188CE / RTL8192CE

I have a new Toshiba 64 bit Laptop PSK8A-09V003 originally loaded with Windows 7.
Wireless LAN with Windows 7 was working fine and identified the Wireless chip as rtl8188ce. OS 12.1 identifies the Wireless chip as rtl8192ce or rtl8192c.

I am trying to install OS 12.2 using Net install. The installation boots up, connect with DHCP to my router with WEB 128 bit encryption and drops the connection when the installation system 1 - 6 have been downloaded.

Using the 12.2 Gnome Live DVD does not let me connect at all.

I searched the net and forums but can;t find any fix.

Note: Any complaint about any PCI device should ALWAYS be posted with the
appropriate section of the output of ‘/sbin/lspci -nn’. As we do not have access
to the driver sources for Windows, its outputs is useless!! The only useful
information is that the device works, which proves the hardware is operational.

There is a relatively new flavor of RTL8188CE that is not handled by any current
driver in Linux. Without the PCI ID, I have to guess, but I think that is what
you have. A fix has been found and pushed upstream, but it is not yet accepted.
Once that happens, the new code will be available in the newest compat-wireless
version.

Until the fix is available in the kernel built into openSUSE, none of the
distributed media will work. It is obvious that I will need to ensure that an
RPM is available. As I do not generally build RPM’s, it will take a while to
learn how to do that.

To readers other than the OP. If I supply a patch, is there some one that could
build the corresponding compat-wireless kmp package?

No, that one was my fault. I fixed that problem earlier today, but I likely
forgot to refresh the patch before uploading. The patch file has been uploaded
again, and should be good now.

This one is your wireless; however, that rev ff is suspicious. The rev on all
the RTL8188CE’s that I have seen is rev 01.

I tried the RPM’s, Result:
1.) Wlan connects and stays stable if set up with fixed IP, started with ‘ifup wlan0’ and is feed constant traffic, like continuous 'ping or a movie.
2.) DHCP is intermittent and drops out.
3.) NetworkManager does not work
4.) Windows Network (Samba) does not work, Trying screws up all PC’s and the router on the LAN. Everything has to be re-booted.
5.) Wired connection only works after ‘ifdown wlan0’ and ‘ifup eth0’

Test distance between the Laptop and router was 1 meter and 15 meters.

When I asked for the detailed output for the RTL8188CE, I only wanted this part.
The rest is not of interest to me.

Now your device has a rev of 01, not 0xff as before. I suspect a contact problem
as something is intermittent. You need to re-seat the device. If it loses a
critical contact while active, your system will freeze. Until simple things like
lspci are stable, any further testing is useless.

I checked again with ‘lspci -nv’. The revision is 01.

Maybe this gives some usefull information.

Can’t re-seat the device. It’s inside the laptop and soldered to the main board.

The wireless range with openSuse is about 10 meters (9% packet loss). with Windows about 100 meters (1% packet loss).

Will try to return the laptop or have it swapped to another.

Had the Laptop exchanged for a new replacement. The new one is worse. No connection possible. Tried Ubunto 12.04 (3.2 kernel). This works fine after compiling and installing the driver from the Realtek website “Linux driver for kernel 2.6.24 (and later, up to 3.2.x)0005.1230.2011”.

Ubunto sucks. Can’t configure the desktop as needed (Gnome 2 / Win95 style) and no graphical desktop for root.

OS 11.4 and 12.1. They have a display problem until I find something like sax2 to configure X. The last 5 cm of the desktop is moved from the left side to the right side.
