So I booted up the live cd for openSUSE 11.4 and to my surprise the wifi worked with my d-link usb adapter. So I decided to install to the hard drive sinse everything else worked too. After installation and after the auto-configuration is done I am logged in. But the problem is now the wifi icon in the notification area is gone and I cannot connect to anything. I found this weird knowing the icon was there running on the live cd and that I also was able to connect to my home wireless on it as well.
Please post the terminal result of
/sbin/lspci -nnk
Do you have a wired connection?
It may be all you need is to install: kernel-firmware

Also I do not have a wired connection but still why would I need kernel-firmware if it worked fine on the live cd
Sorry you have a USB wireless device.
Please do:
lsusb -v
And post result
I cannot post the results because of the character limit
Now I can’t post stuff because it says I’m posting 5 pictures with a maximum of 4. I’m not posting any :S
It’s because the forum converts certain character combinations to smilies etc…
I will check that out in a bit, but I did notice something with iwconfig. The output for my wlan0 seems to me perfectly fine.
output:
wlan0 IEEE 802.11abgn ESSID:off/any
Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=0 dBm
Retry long limit:7 RTS thr : off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Management:off
Oh jeeze, now I know what you meant about it converting characters into faces.
I still do not understand why I was able to connect perfectly fine using the network manager on the live cd, and then after installing the network manager icon was just gone.
have you tried knemo? It monitors any and all connections in the tray, it works!
I might try that, I have almost given up. But I still have no solution as to why it works on live cd but not on full install
Are you using network manager or ifup?
