Wireless not working!

Hi guys I’m new with openSUSE so I’m trying to get the hang of it. My wireless is not working I’m only on wired connection, I have a 1001P EEE PC with ar2427 wireless card (according to windows 7). I have googled and check for similar issues but I still dont get it to work. It’s frustrating but I still love the system tho… more than W7!!

I would like to learn more about this system also. I know everything about ms (commands and all that bs), I want to learn everything about linux  LOVE IT!

(OMG I still cant believe such a system is even free I’m like a little boy with a new toy lol)

Forgot to mention. The hardware is not detected under usb, pci or network (if im not mistaken) it detects only the wired.

Please post the following from a terminal

uname -a
/sbin/lspci -nnk

That’s how I felt in circa 2003 when I discovered a bunch of CDs in a computer magazine. Couldn’t figure out what the confidence trick was. I was very suspicious of the claim that something called “red hat” could really make a computer run. Until then it had not crossed my mind that a PC could run on anything but dos or windows (or apple computers of course, a different breed entirely).

I re-read the magazine for weeks deciding whether I was game to risk destroying a computer by trying to install the red hat thing.

Here it is, I had to copy and paste it to open office then open it on windows because I’m at a friend’s house and he only has WiFi. I check the code with the terminal they look the same. I dont know if it changes because of copy and paste but if it does then I’l post it directly when I get home…

Thanks guys for your replies. I hope that I can learn so that I can past my knowledge to future newbs like me

http://software.opensuse.org/ymp/home:Lord_LT/openSUSE_11.2_Update/compat-wireless.ymp

It said that compat-wireless could not be installed… the rest went ok… but…

now what? lol

Ok got it working. It was a simple fix :-S… Just went to “Install Software” on “Control Center” and installed everything under “recommended”.

I would suggest everyone that has problems with their WiFi to do this first :-).

P.S Why did I have to go to the software manager? Why dont they offer it as a system update or something? Because I updated the system so I never though the answer would lie there… I’m a newb here tho so idk? just wondering…

because an “update” brings system installed software up to a new
security/patch level…

for example: say you have Firefox 12.3 installed and a security
deficiency is found and patched, and along with several bug fixes an
update is released bringing the program up to version 12.4, in that
case the “update” would automatically show up and the update occur…

but, what if you were using Opera and didn’t even have Firefox
installed? well, in that case there would be NO updates served up…

because, YaST Online Updater won’t try update UNinstalled software…

to have something to update you must first you must install the
software, and THEN when there is a security patch or update for the
installed software you can update it…

in your case there were needed (recommended) software that you had
never installed, but did when you went “to “Install Software” on
“Control Center” and installed everything under “recommended”.”

so, now that all that is installed, it can be updated/patched when and
if bugs or security problems are found and fixed…

make sense now?

btw, in normal lingo here, there is also a difference between upgrade
and update: you patch an existing installed package via an update, but
when a new improved, more features added package is released (say
going from KDE3 to KDE4, or Firefox 2.x to 3.x) then you upgrade…

which might later be updated (to fix the always present bugs and
security glitches)…

Thanks for the info…

I need to learn more! :\

Hi,

I’ve got an Asus EeePC 1001PX and have exactly the same ‘lpci’ output for the network. I’ve installed the compat rpms from the link and the wireless got enabled but it never connects to my router. What am I missing? Thank you.

Well, I’ve turned the radio on and off 20 times and it finally connected! amazing…

Let’s hope that’s not the default procedure after each boot.

Hi there!

I have the same problem. OpenSuse 11.2 64bit on EeePC 1001P … after installation WLAN is gone.
Found this thread and installed the recommended compat-wireless which failed/ended only “partially succesfull”, went to Yast and selected everything available for this topic and after a few “conflicts” with package compatibility it started installation. Just to fail again after a while with “cannot resolve http://download.opensuse.org/update/11.2” and then the system chrashes down completely. I checked the availability of opensuse and everything is ok, the connection was there. So obviously something installation related has broken the connection to the internet.
Any idea???

Ok I didnt read the output you pusted, being honest…

But did you check on Yast for the “suggested” or “recommended” packages?
