because an “update” brings system installed software up to a new
security/patch level…
for example: say you have Firefox 12.3 installed and a security
deficiency is found and patched, and along with several bug fixes an
update is released bringing the program up to version 12.4, in that
case the “update” would automatically show up and the update occur…
but, what if you were using Opera and didn’t even have Firefox
installed? well, in that case there would be NO updates served up…
because, YaST Online Updater won’t try update UNinstalled software…
to have something to update you must first you must install the
software, and THEN when there is a security patch or update for the
installed software you can update it…
in your case there were needed (recommended) software that you had
never installed, but did when you went “to “Install Software” on
“Control Center” and installed everything under “recommended”.”
so, now that all that is installed, it can be updated/patched when and
if bugs or security problems are found and fixed…
make sense now?
btw, in normal lingo here, there is also a difference between upgrade
and update: you patch an existing installed package via an update, but
when a new improved, more features added package is released (say
going from KDE3 to KDE4, or Firefox 2.x to 3.x) then you upgrade…
which might later be updated (to fix the always present bugs and
security glitches)…
