wireless network card can not be configured wright

Hello,

I’ve been using opensuse since version 10.3. Now i am at 11.4 and just recently reconfigured my pc setup in my home. The desktop was always connected on my LAN via a utp connection but I placed it at a new location in my home and the network connection now has to be a wireless one. And after several attempts and following the posted wireless network guide I still have no connections.

Here are the steps and the responses:

iwlist scan

linux-sff:~ # iwlist scan
lo Interface doesn’t support scanning.

eth0 Interface doesn’t support scanning.

wlan0 Interface doesn’t support scanning : Network is down

Then via Yast opening Network Settings
I then change nothing just click OK.

Again via CMDline iwlist scan and my wlan is seen!?

Cell 02 - Address: 00:11:50:24:5D:07

Encryption key:on
Bit Rates:11 Mb/s
IE: WPA Version 1
Group Cipher : CCMP
Pairwise Ciphers (1) : CCMP
Authentication Suites (1) : PSK

However I can’t establish a connection. When I use the Yast - Network Devices - Network Settings via the traditional ifup methode it does not see any wireless networks. I can fill in my own and the WPA key but the effect is nill. No network connection is made.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to solve this?
Thanks in advance.

You might want to consider loading kernel-firmware from YaST / Software / Software Management and see if that helps. I see where in kernel 3.0 (and higher) the new rt2800usb supports your wireless adapter. In any event, you need both a kernel module and kernel firmware that supports it to be loaded.

Thank You,

Thanks for your reaction.
I did the upgrade to firmware 3 but that did not succeed somehow, no clue as to why not. So a bit more help would be appreciated. Is there any guide/tutorial that i can follow to help me upgrade to kernel version 3 with the mentioned rt2800usb support? (if I do this do I have then both a new kernel module and kernel firmware)

So upgrading your kernel might help or not, but its worth a try. Check out this bash script:

S.A.K.C. - SUSE Automated Kernel Compiler - Version 2.50 - Blogs - openSUSE Forums

I upgrade the kernel all of the time for all sorts of reasons and it is safe to do. However, you don’t know for sure what is wrong. I had some problems this weekend installing openSUSE 12.1 with my work laptop wireless and while I was successful in the end, its hard to say what exactly the problem was. Specifically I had two driver types to use, b43 and wl, ran automatically and manually. I started in Automatic, loading one, then loaded the other, then unloaded the other, went to manual and then back to automatic and low and behold wireless started working properly. That’s not a procedure I can map out for someone else to do. Now with newer kernels, I have had great results with several issues including wireless, sound and overall speed, but if you don;t know the problem, loading a new kernel is just a shot in the dark without knowing more.

Thank You,

It took a while because of a holiday but here are my results. I did the succesfull upgrade to opensuse kernel 11.4. However this did not change anything with regards to my wireless connection problem. I read some other threads with similar problems that could not be resolved by kernel upgrades only a clean install did somehow work. This however will take some time for me to do. I will close this thread because it leads to nowhere.
Thanks for the assistence.

Your device is categorized as “UNKNOWN” in the kernel. These devices are not
configured in any openSUSE kernels.

What driver do you intend to use? What kernel? Note - kernel 11.4 is not a valid
choice.

It works
After reading several topics on problems with (usb connected) WLan cards it seemed that there was only one way to get it working and that is by playing save and combining all the gathered info; The main items are;

  • do a clean install of the latest opensuse version that is 12.1 (so NO upgrades just wipe out the root partition) ( /home and swap I left intact)
  • use a WLan card based on the ralink chip (kernel driver r8712u)
  • use gnome as a desktop (I always used KDE before)

I did the clean install of opensuse 12.1 without any problem.
I bought a Sitecom wireless usb adapter 300N x2 (which is built using a ralink chipset according to sitecom personnel). After starting up the PC, Gnome desktop came up. I then opened Yast2 (Y2-controlcenter-gnome) and chose Network Devices - Network settings.

There was only one entry which belonged to my LAN connection (NetXtreme BCM5751 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express (Not connected)).
I closed the Network settings.
I plugged in my Sitecom wireless usb adapter 300N x2.
In Yast2 I opened my Network settings again and there was now an extra entry: RTL8191S WLAN Adapter
Selecting that network card, click on edit, chose dynamic adress, next
In Wireless device settings chose Operating Mode managed. Box with Network Name (ESSID) was empty. Clicked on the Scan Network and my ESSID got filled in automatically.
Authentication Mode WPA-PSK, passphrase, filled in my encryption key and clicked on next
Then on OK and then closed Yast2.
I opened Firefox and I saw the Opensuse homepage.

All of a sudden I got very happy and at peace with the world

In retrospect I am beginning to feel that the decision to select Gnome as the desktop did not make any difference. The clean install combined with an USB/Wlan nic which is supported by a Ralink driver are the important steps you must follow.

I hope this will help somebody who is puzzling with a wlan nic that does not work anymore problem I had.

Happy to hear of your success and good to know your final procedure to get there. Generally, the desktop selected does not matter thought Network Manager can be different and some have given a nod to the Gnome version over KDE. Of course I use KDE and have got all to work with wireless so far but its great to know just what you did.

Thank You,
