Wireless issues, openSUSE 11.3

Hello people.

I’ve just installed openSUSE 11.3 for the first time on a Dell E1505 notebook and am having problems connecting to my home wireless network. Using the Network Manager I’ve been able to find my home network and connect after entering the network password. After a minute or two the wireless network is still shown as active but their is no connection (websites will not load). During following the primer thread the connection started working again to then go down again after a restart.

Following the primer thread found here: My wireless doesn’t work - a primer on what I should do next

this is what I have got so far:

  1. Wireless device:
0b:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG [Golan] Network Connection (rev 02)

ID code: 8086:4222

  1. After running dmesg | less I haven’t found anything showing the firmware is not installed.

  2. /usr/sbin/iwconfig:

pan0 Interface doesn't support scanning.

Your wireless has associated. Whatever the problem, it seems to be “upstream”.
These could be a problem getting an IP number, a routing problem, or a
nameserver problem. To find which is the culprit, please post the output of the
following:

/sbin/ifconfig
/sbin/route -n
cat /etc/resolv.conf

Along with the above, open a command prompt and

ping 216.239.51.99

(Google)

Ok, so last night after posting my wireless problem I shut down the notebook and went to bed. Today I disconnected the ether cable I had connected last night and turned on the notebook. The wireless internet seems to be working fine, a little slow, but working. I ran video, speed tests, any thing I figured would make it crash but it kept working (actually got higher speeds than the desktop pc next to it got through its wireless). I tried restarting it thinking it may revert back to it not working, but it worked fine.

Thank you lwfinger and BenRhoads for your responses. I will post the output of those commands anyway as it may lead to what was going on or if the problem re-emerges.

Ha, after running these commands the connection is now not working again. I turned off the wireless and turned it back on and it worked for a minute and then quit again. Looks like it is now acting exactly like it was before. I’m going to try a restart to see if it will work again. Here are the outputs of the commands

How do You accomplish turning off and on the wireless again ? Are You using something like Fn+F2 or do you have a switch on the laptop or are You doing it some other way ?

Best regards,
Greg

I’m turning off/on the wireless in the Network Manager pull up menu.

Also, after restarting the notebook the problems continued so I reconnected the hard-wired connection and continued working on other things. Later I disconnected the hard-wire to test the wireless and the wireless worked fine again. I have a feeling this is a firewall problem but I hardly know what I’m talking about here, so just an uneducated guess.

Ok it’s fine then cause pressing Fn+F2 might not work on linux. I’m sure the problem is NOT firewall. ipv6 might be Your problem. Check this thread for advice on how to disable it :
Howto: Disable IPv6 on openSUSE 11.2
What might also work to find Your problem is to look in the newtork manager logs. To do so type this command in the terminal :

sudo tail -f /var/log/NetworkManager

leave it running while your normal computer usage and check what pops up while your problems come back.

Best regards,
Greg
