wireless issues Compaq, Atheros card

i have looked trough the forum and it appers to me that i have slightly difrent issue. (or i trouble with understanding)

Start with my system:
Compaq Presario A900
2 gb ram
1.86 intel dual T2390 cpu (hm appers to run att 800mhz. oh maby thats buz speed)
dual boot with Vista 32
and
OpenSuse 11.2 (i586)
KDE 4.3.1 “release 6”

Atheros. AR5001 Wireless Network
Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)

I instaled and got opensuse to work with cabel att my home. but dident have time to look more there.
got to momsplace and foundled litle and then kliking next to clock on the cabel connection and then i notised next to cabel connection it was an antenna.
wirless found it says, it had found mom’s Linksys. typed in the pw and it connected. so i pulled out the cabel and yeas the wireless worked.

dident think more of it.

i started looking for graphic drivers and photo software and other things, foundled in yast and so. dident realy manage the driver download but found settings on the default driver for graphics and managed to adjust it oki.
rebooted and some on and ofs a couple days, got some updates on opensuse. (automaticly)

now sadly i dont remember directly what i was doing, but had to reboot.
when pc was on again the wireless would not connect and the sign next to clock was gone, connected cabel and that works.

open yast 2 and find wireless. there it says NetworkManager has controll. i then rightklick the cabel ikon.
and found kontrollmodul. (my kde is in norwegian so i can miss on the names)
on wireless i do find mom’s network. it looks right but some how wireless are not active or not looking. dosent seem to be able to do much there.

i go back to yast2
on network overview i notice it is two wireless there one with driver and oki and one not oki and a cabel notice who is oki. the oki one is on dhcp. witch is good according to router.

in first there i changed to ifup. this gave me accses to the wireless settings for the one who is oki. but not the other.
i cant even delete this one. (i know sucky xplaination)

so i change back to NetworManager and the ikon come back next to clock. but only the cabel.

my gues is that input not ready is screwing up. i want to remove that and keep the other one.

Tho maby it has just been locked. but where to open again? dont remember but have heard a keypad combo for this.

any sugestions on where and what to locck for wud be nice.
but do remember im complete newbie on opensuse. and might need teaspoon aproch to geet to where the settings ar to be checked and do. how to and what to. lol my years of windows are in the way for me

I see this can be missunderstood. Bad choise of words.

I meen the computer been turned on and off sevral times. and also used the windows part.

When wireless did work it was stabile.

:frowning:

No sugestions.

looked more around but cant figure this out.
I tryed
a code : alias AR5001 wlan0

But didnothing acctuly it say not found.

Cant understand y i cant delete the xtra wireleess entry in suse.
I can only delete things that says oki on… anoying

Run these commands.

lsmod
lspci

What encryption are you using? WEP or WPA?
Are you still using networkmanager?

I know the laptop. The wireless works out of the box on 11.2, so it’s somewhere else, probably the network manager.

Which KDE4 version are you on?

You could install wicd from Software.openSUSE.org
Worked for me when the network manager would not.

I cant go on OpenSuse now. I look into that when i can.

I think it is strange that it first worked, and thenn stoped to work.
But also dislike that in yast2 i se two wireless one not propper innstaled.
In my mind this looks like a conflikt. But i can not remove it…

I seems to be KDE 4.3.1 “release 6”

I wil try wicd.

Wicd dosent find my wireless.
I think its something driver or install fault here, even my Nokia finds this wireless network.

Sligthly embarresing.
I found the problem. It was betwin the screen and chair.

I was foundling in wicd prefrenses and discovered that it dident say anything on the wireless there.
So i simply typed wlan0.

Then when i did that i noticed in Yast that the entry of wireless card not ready, disapered.
And when i refreshed wicd i found sevral wireless points.
Unf im att work and dont have any keys to these. But since it is searching and finding networks i take it that the problem is solved.

Want to thank evryone for inputs.

ps. is it a “solved” button here?

Hrmf

i was to quick there :frowning:

It now finds wireless and so.
but wont connect.

says can not geet ip.

it is on wpa2
encryption aes

After 6 atempts att mom’s place it decided to work.

Wat it qas now im not sure.
it founded all networks in the building. connected, but got ip error.

now after sevral atempts it got ip.

can the router react since the wireless card is mostly conected from vista. and now its opensuse?

anywhy seems to be oki. just need a few atempts for ip addy.

There have been some reports of problems when the AP is slow to react to DHCP
requests, particularly when to DHCP Lease time is long. It has nothing to do
with the Windows/Linux mix of DHCP Clients; however, Windows will just wait
forever without timing out the way Linux does.

Oh oki.
So basicly for now its just to retry.

Atleast it meens that my wireless is now working.

now i just have to figure out the webcam :stuck_out_tongue: then se if i find skype or similar

i uninstaled wicd.
and now it seems to connect litle faster, and hold stabil.
It be coinnecting trough networ manager i belewe.

hm. litle good thing this. foundling with this wireless thingy, makes me understand litle more og opensuse.
