Wireless device missing after online update

Hello.

Few days ago I noticed that during online update a new kernel has been installed. After that, my wireless stopped working. No issue before, ever.

The LAN works fine.

Hi again.

I have to mention that my wireless device works just fine for any other OS my grub can load.

So as workaround, how can I rollback to the previous kernel version?

Thanks.

Hi
So is the latest kernel-firmware loaded, also check with rfkill to see if it’s softblocked (not a Fn key for wireless?).

You can go into YaST and rollback the kernel (see the versions tab), or when you boot select advanced and should be able to select the previous version, then rollback in YaST.

Hello, Malcom.

After I loaded from grub / advanced the previous kernel, nothing changed.

opensuse:~ # nmcli d s
DEVICE TYPE STATE CONNECTION
eth0 ethernet unavailable –
wlan0 wifi unavailable –
lo loopback unmanaged –
opensuse:~ # uname -r
4.1.36-38-default

There is a Fn +F5 combination indeed, it simply checks / un-checks the Wireless box shown in the bottom-right. I can do this as well simply clicking on the same little square box.

Thanks for reply.

I will download rfkill and let you know the result.

Hello, Malsom.

Rfkill did not help.

opensuse:/home/ionut/Documents # rfkill unblock wifi
opensuse:/home/ionut/Documents # nmcli d s
DEVICE TYPE STATE CONNECTION
eth0 ethernet unavailable –
wlan0 wifi unavailable –
lo loopback unmanaged –

Is it possible somehow to uninstall the wireless drivers and to reinstall them after? How can I identify them?

Thanks again.

Hi
The command is;

rfkill list
rfkill unblock N

rfkill list
0: phy0: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: no

Where N is the number (eg 0) of the ‘Soft blocked’ device…

Use the lspci -nnk, lsusb or hwinfo commands to see info on drivers etc.

Hi, Malcom.

A bit of recent history:

First a zypper update without wireless change.

662 2016-12-23 13:46:10 modprobe iwlwifi -r # it did not work, as the wireless was active
663 2016-12-23 13:46:57 modprobe iwlwifi 11n_disable=0
664 2016-12-23 13:47:02 modprobe iwlwifi -r
665 2016-12-23 13:47:38 modprobe iwlwifi 11n_disable=0
666 2016-12-23 13:47:41 modprobe iwlwifi 11n_disable=1
667 2016-12-23 13:47:44 modprobe iwlwifi 11n_disable=0
668 2016-12-23 13:47:54 modprobe iwlwifi -r # still no luck…
669 2016-12-23 13:48:33 modprobe -rv iwldvm # something happened here, a list of few things (four modules?) were restarted. I forgot to copy them.
670 2016-12-23 13:48:42 modprobe iwlwifi -r # no more error at this point
671 2016-12-23 13:49:03 modprobe iwlwifi 11n_disable=0
672 2016-12-23 13:49:05 modprobe iwlwifi -r

Now I could not activate / deactivate wireless as before. It was “grey”.

So I did a reboot. Then, surprise!

opensuse:~ # nmcli d s
DEVICE TYPE STATE CONNECTION
eth0 ethernet connected Wired connection 1
wlan0 wifi connected Ezo
lo loopback unmanaged –

Many thanks for support, Malcom.
