Wireless connection question

Hey, this is probably going to seem like a real dumb, easy to answer question, but I couldn’t figure it out myself:
I am new to running OpenSUSE 11.0 with GNOME (and Linux in general). The other day I accidentally deleted two icons I regularly use from the panel. I was able to find where to get one of them from, but I cannot get the one that allows me to connect to various wireless or wired internet connections. I searched the forums and someone else had this issue, but it was never answered. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi
That should be the nm-applet (network manager applet). You can also add
it to the startup in control center -> sessions -> Startup Programs
Tab. Add as follows;

Name: Network Manager
Command: nm-applet --sm-disable
Comment: Network Manager

Thanks. I added the Network Manager to the startup, but then it didn’t automatically connect to the network. I changed the command to “nm-applet --sm-enable” instead and that allowed me to connect automatically at startup. I guess what I am really trying to figure out is how to add the icon back to my panel in the lower right so I can left-click on it and have it show me the available networks like it did when it was initially installed?

Hi
You have the notification area applet running on the panel? Ho does
your network start, not traditional?

The internet connection always started up automatically. There used to be an icon in the panel, next my volume control and clock that would allow me to switch between wireless connections. This was handy since my connection falls out a lot and this would allow me to easily reconnect in two mouse clicks. I installed from the GNOME Live CD and this icon was there by default, I did no customizing during installation.

Hi
Strange… It could very well be a ‘liveCD’ issue. The display
notification area or other items around the notification area haven’t
been locked and thus causing the notification area not to expand to
show the applet?

Else can you create a test user and login to see if the issue is there?

No, its not locked or anything like that. I mistakenly hit remove from panel when my mouse was acting funny (a hardware issue). I got the other icon back by simply saying “Add to panel” and selecting the icon I had deleted, but the wireless/ethernet connection one that was there before doesn’t show up on the list to choose from. Any other suggestions?

Ok, so its finally been figured out. In another post about the Pidgin icon not showing up in the system tray, someone pointed out that I probably had removed my notification area. I restored that and presto, the network connection icon is back. Thanks for your the help!
