Hey everyone I just installed OpenSuse for the first time, on a Dell Inspiron 15R, after giving up on Ubuntu 11.04 because it wouldn’t install properly. Anyway I am having an issue with OpenSuse and connecting to my wi-fi hotspot at my house. I can use my phone to create a mobile hotspot and that at one point worked fine…But then that stopped working as well. When I try and connect to a network, it just says “activating” under the network name and stays that way for about 10 minutes before it just disconnects. Any suggestions?
OKay now I have another problem…I was following the suggestions I found in one thread on this forum, but at one point I had to use my root password…the problem is that when I entered it, it didn’t work. And I KNOW I got it right. I then decided to try and change it…but every method I found that claimed to be able to let me change my root password said it needed my old password…which isn’t working. I’d really appreciate some help with this.
If your root password isn’t working you have problems.
Just check your characters are coming out as you would expect…
It may be easier just to re-install, that is if you Just installed it…
Okay thanks for that suggestion.
Okay I reinstalled OpenSuse and was able to get a root password…though the wireless still doesn’t work, same problem as before.
Please post the result of
/sbin/lspci -nnk

I tried it, got this with desktop, default and pae:
Loading repository data…

Nothing to do.
You seem to not have packman essentials repo. Here is the link to repo:
OKay thanks but one thing…sorry for the newb question but…how am I supposed to download the files there?
First issue this command:
sudo zypper ar http://linktorepository "choose a name for repository"
Then you can install anything in that repo using zypper like;
zypper in broadcom-wl
Okay thank you.
Okay I installed the wl driver and then rebooted…my connection still won’t work, though thankfully now I can use my mobile hotspot feature on my phone to connect…before that didn’t work either.
Please post result of
rpm -qa | grep broadcom
uname -a
rpm -qa | grep kernel
For rpm -qa | grep broadcom I got
broadcom-wl-5.100.82.38-7.pm.9.4.x86_64
broadcom-wl-kmp-default-5.100.82.38_k2.6.37.6_0.5-7.pm.9.4.x86_64
For uname -a I got
2.6.37.1-1.2-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2011-02-21 10:34:10 +0100 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
For rpm-qa | grep kernel I got
kernel-firmware-2.6.38-1.2.1.noarch
kernel-desktop-2.6.37.1-1.2.2.x86_64
kernel-default-2.6.37.6-0.5.1.x86_64
Change this package
broadcom-wl-kmp-default-5.100.82.38_k2.6.37.6_0.5-7.pm.9.4.x86_64
to
broadcom-wl-kmp-desktop-5.100.82.38_k2.6.37.6_0.5-7.pm.9.4.x86_64
Or perhaps easier: boot the kernel-default from the boot screen menu
Let me explain a little in case you don’t follow.
You have 2 different kernels installed
kernel-desktop (the one you were booted to when you posted uname -a) But it needs updating I think
kernel-default
You have installed
broadcom-wl-5.100.82.38-7.pm.9.4.x86_64
broadcom-wl-kmp-default-5.100.82.38_k2.6.37.6_0.5-7.pm.9.4.x86_64
which match to kernel-default
Hence if you boot from that at the boot menu
All should work
Um, I have no clue how to do either of those…would you mind explaining how exactly I peform those actions?
EDIT* Okay I just saw your exlanation post after posting this originally. Thanks for explaining.
