Wireless ceased to work on Dell 2110

Hello there,

I have installed Suse 11.3 on my Dell 2110, and everything went fine (wireless network included). After a couple of weeks, while I was trying to access a wireless network, the wireless module ceased to work.

Now on knetworkmanager the option to enable wireless network is grey and cannot be selected.

Following some indications I found in this forum for a similar issue, I uninstalled the broadcom drivers and re-install them again, with a cold start between the two phases as suggested, without success. After that, the option on knetworkmanager is still grey, and from yast the wireless module appears as “not configured”. If I switch to ifup and configure it, the situation does not change.

This is my current configuration:
Suse 11.3, kernel 2.6.34.7-0.3-desktop, 64 bit version.
KDE 4.4.4 “release 3”

I am using the following drivers:
b43-firmware 4.174.64.19-3.pm.3.1
b43-fwcutter 012-6.1
broadcom-wl 5.60.48.36-7.pm.8.7
broadcom-wl-kmp-desktop 5.60.48.36_k2.6.34.7_0.3-7.pm.8.7

and these are the output of the few tests I made:

lspci output:

dmesg output:

iwconfig output:

iwlist scan output:

the only thing I am able to notice about this is that according to lspci I have a Broadcom BCM43224, while on dmesg it appears as Broadcom BCM4353, this is a bit confusing for me.

Any suggestion will be much appreciated

Try the wl driver
Install Broadcom Drivers from Packman

Hi, and thank you for the suggestion…
Unfortunately this was exactly what I did: actually the broadcom-wl drivers I mentioned are the one currently available on Packman repository

So you are using the wl driver

So are you saying it’s not working?

Please supply the output - exactly of the following:

uname -a
rpm -qa | grep broadcom

Here the results:

uname -a
Linux nanodesktop.site 2.6.34.7-0.3-desktop #1 SMP PREEMPT 2010-09-20 15:27:38 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

broadcom-wl-kmp-desktop-5.60.48.36_k2.6.34.7_0.3-7.pm.8.7.x86_64

Yes, I am using the wl driver, and it worked for at least a couple of weeks. It stopped working while i was trying to connect to a new wireless network.
From then on, on knetworkmanager the option to enable the wireless connection is grey, and cannot be selected.

If I manually try to add a new wireless connection, even if the right interface is recognised (eth1) when I click on “scan” nothing happens

----MODIFIED----

probably it may be useful to know that, as suggested somewhere else on this forum, I am using also this firmware for the wl drivers:

rpm -qa |grep b43
b43-fwcutter-012-6.1.x86_64
b43-firmware-4.174.64.19-3.pm.3.1.noarch

If you create a new user account temporarily and login there. Does it work? Or did you try that already?

Same behaviour with either with a new account, or logging in as root

Check this
Getting Your Wireless to Work

Make sure your wireless switch is ON

Actually, there is no wireless switch on my netbook. I simply used to activate the wireless directly from knetworkmanager.

I already followed, the guidelines you suggested, anyway I missed the diagnostic tool at the bottom of the page. Here is the output:

I’m not sure I understand it sufficiently to advise
Perhaps post it back in the thread that the script came from. Maybe James can help

BTW, you can use pastebin to post the long stuff

Well, thank you anyway for having tried; I will drop a line to the script creator.

Cheers

Hello MadSplinter, sorry to take so long to get with you. I would wonder if NetworkManager is running at all. I ask for you to try two things first. Open a terminal session and type these two commands:

sudo rm /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state

sudo /etc/init.d/network restart

Thank You,

Hello,

and thank you very much for your feedback.
Today I tried a last, desperate, solution: I brutally uninstalled and then re-installed again after a cold start all the networkmanager and broadcom drivers.
I don’t know how, but It worked.

If anyone, for the community’s sake, wants to go into deeper investigations on what happened to my netbook, I am available for giving all the feedback you may need. Unfortunately I am not so skilled to go down on that road all by myself. Otherwise, from my point of view, the case could be considered happily closed.

Many thanks again to Caf4926 and Jdmcdaniel3 for their support

No problem
Good luck with it from now on…
