wintv pvr usb2

i want to try to get my wintv pvr usb2 running will this article still work to get it going? Set up Hauppauge WinTV-PVR USB2 - openSUSE is there a easier way? i have opensuse 11.4 kde 4.6.0 64 bit

Plug you device in and see if /dev/video* is created

ls /dev/video*

I’m not sure whether the frimware step is required or not, but it should be easy to find out. (Maybe others with this hardware can chip in).

From this guide, these applications are suggested:MythTV, Kaffeine, Xine amd TV Time.

zypper in tvtime

This reference suggests firmware is required.

I plugged in the device and i didnt see opensuse recognize it, its not in the device notifier. i typed

ls /dev/video* and the next line in root terminal said video0
after i plugged in the unit and noticed in the online update was ivtv update, ivtv firmware - driver implematation for icompression or conexant
video capture cards, i dont know if it was just a coincidence

i looked in the dev folder and there is a video0 & video1

where would i look to find out if the device is being recognized?

Ityped in a su terminal lsusb -v and i show hauppauge in the list

I also saw a folder, which was found in /sys/class/pvrusb2/sn-*xxxxxx, inside that folder was a bunch of files and folder

I plugged in the device and i didnt see opensuse recognize it, its not in the device notifier.

The device notifier is for storage devices

where would i look to find out if the device is being recognized?

Try installing and using mythtv (Packman repo) or tvtime etc. If the device is functional, you’ll soon know…

after i plugged in the unit and noticed in the online update was ivtv update, ivtv firmware - driver implematation for icompression or conexant

Are you saying ivtv-frimware is installed? This command (as root) will confirm

rpm -qa |grep ivtv

Edit: From this ivtv guide I found some simple CLI test to capture video to a file. (Note you may need to check the ownership of /dev/video0 first).

cat /dev/video0 > test.mpg

You can use ivtv-tune (part of the ivtv package) to tune your device

ivtv-tune -l

will give you a list of channels. More info on that utility here.

which mythtv do i use? there are 5 or 6, mythtv backend, mythtv frontend, mythtvsetup, mythtv docs, mythtv common, base-themes, common-debuginfo,debugsource

yes i have the ivtv firmware and installed the ivtv. it list channels and frequencies

i tried tvtime but i cant get it to change off off my webcam, cant get any cable stations running at all, just shows webcam camera shot

I’m not familiar with MythTV - you’re going to have to do some reading:

Opensuse 11.0 - 11.2 - MythTV Official Wiki

The above is recent enough to guide you on the installation. Provided you have already got all the multimedia support installed, it should only be a matter of installing the mythtv app and configuring according to the instructions given.

MythTV Official Wiki

Here’s another guide for openSUSE 11.3:

OpenSuSE 11.3 - MythTV

BTW, there is also kdetv and bunch of other capture apps listed here.

when i typed in the code

ivtv-tune -l and got results showing 125 channels and frequencies does that mean i have all the drives and just need to find an app that works?

i dont want to keep installing and uninstalling apps if i dont have all the drivers and packages,
is there a way to find out or does the results from ivtv code mean it should work if i find a good app

The last link I gave you has some useful commands to confirm that the device is working. Did you read it yet?

dmesg | egrep -i '(ivtv|tveeprom|tuner)'

Checking the frimware is installed (I’d say it is based on your ‘ivtv-tune -l’ output):

ls /lib/firmware -l

The kdetv app may be easier to test with. I can’t really advise further as I don’t own such a device. You’re going to have to read and experiment a little.

Hi
With my usb device I used smplayer or vlc to watch hdtv free to air
channels.

Hi
I wrote about it here;
http://forums.opensuse.org/forums/english/get-technical-help-here/multimedia/405117-sabrent-digital-hdtv-atsc-analog-usb.html

I had to build the kernel module for it…

Hi
The command is scan for dvb, assuming you have dvb installed? There is
the command /usr/sbin/hwinfo…

i added dvb- typed scan but i get a bunch of stuff int there.

when i typed in the command /usr/sbin/hwinfo

i get my tuner usb device hauppauge
driver pvrusb2
driver module pvrusb2
driver status pvrusb2 is active
driver activation mode cmd- modprobe pvrusb2

Hi
For mine I just run;

scan /usr/share/dvb/atsc/us-NTSC-center-frequencies-8VSB -o zap | tee ~/channels.conf

You would need to check down in /usr/share/dvb/ for the right file for
your location.

The channels file can then be loaded with mplayer or vlc. Have you
tried your installed applications now that dvb is installed to see if
they scan?

scan /usr/share/dvb/atsc/us-Cable-Standard-center-frequencies-QAM256

these are the results i get

scanning /usr/share/dvb/atsc/us-Cable-Standard-center-frequencies-QAM256
using ‘/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0’ and ‘/dev/dvb/adapter0/demux0’
main:2284: FATAL: failed to open ‘/dev/dvb/adapter0/frontend0’: 2 No such file or directory

i dont know how to load the file with mplayer or vlc? i just cant seem to get any application to view channels
