Wine 1.7 update

openSUSE 12.3 KDE 4.10.5 release 1

Wine installed and updated using the openSuse Build Service -Wine CVS Builds repository
Updates are done thru Zypper.

I run two programs thru Wine - 1]WinMX 3.54b4 2]WinAmp 2.95

When I did updates thru Zypper today it updated my Wine to ver. 1.7.10-308.1-x86_64.
After the updates, these two programs stopped working. I went to the FAQ’s on the wine site and looked into Troubleshooting [How can I get a debugging log (a.k.a. terminal output)?] and followed directions. A log.txt file was created, but all it said was “Could not find winmx.exe”/“Could not find winamp.exe”

Not knowing what else to try, I uninstalled Wine 1.7.10-308.1-x86_64, turned the openSuse Build Service -Wine CVS Builds repository off and installed Wine 1.5.23-1.1.1-x86_64. Both programs are working under the 1.5.23-1.1.1-x86_64 version. Should I leave it alone or try to get ver 1.7 working?

Not sure where to go from here. Is it Wine or something else? I have been told it is best to run the most current version of Wine.
1st time I have had this problem.
Would someone help, please? Thank You

NOTE: a post was also done at the Wine forum.

Not super familiar with wine but you could use something like PlayOnLinux to manage the wine versions.

Also you should check the appdb for each application to make sure it works under a certain version of wine

  1. http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=288
  2. http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=5

Both of them seem to have very old tests that were not done with any current version of wine. So I guess it is possible newer versions of wine changed something and now these applications dont work.

I see you also have openSUSE 13.1 available, try run your WINE programs there and see how that goes. OS 13.1 is shipped with WINE version 1.7.2 thus you might get an idea of whether or not it might be the WINE version that causes this failure.

In my experience, though, WINE is rather unreliable as new versions quite often change behaviour of or breaks support for previously working apps entirely. As alanbortu suggested, you might perhaps consider using PlayOnLinux, or any of the other similiar applications, if you wish to stick with WinMX and WinAmp for some time still.

Thank for replying.

@alanbortu - Surprising how one goes along thinking things will always work as well as they did yesterday. I will go to the wine site and inquire what I should do about this. Is PlayOnLinux an alternative to wine or does it work in conjuction?

@F_Sauce -

I see you also have openSUSE 13.1 available
. Yes I just installed it on another machine #2] and I have just tried winmx and winamp installed thru wine 1.7 and so far there does not seem to be any problem. Whats with that?
I am wondering if I completely uninstall wine 1.5, winmx and winamp on the problem machine #1] and reinstall them [wine 1.7 1st and then winmx and winamp], could that solve it, viewing that all runs OK under 13.1. In your opinion, could this work?
***How would I best make sure that wine 1.5 was completely uninstalled?
***I am not really ready to put opensuse 13.1 on machine #1, yet.

Thanks

Its a known issue that sometimes wine updates break compatibility with some programs (usually by accident). Best thing to do is post on the wine appdb and I suppose ask on wine forums (http://forum.winehq.org/ Be sure to read the rules on the forum and see their wiki). As for POL it just lets you manage wine applications, wine versions and wine dependencies (like all the dx9 stuff that some programs need and you have to use winetricks to install).

Hi again!

I’m not sure I should give any such advice, I frequently end up in WINE trouble myself:) But to remove WINE completely just delete the local directory .wine under home; deinstall WINE from YaST and install the new 1.7.x version; it should, most likely, be sufficient just to upgrade though but you never know. There are some WINE entries under .local/share… ( within home) also but just leave them be, they are desktop entries, icons and app links.

You might benefit from exploring POL though. For instance, if you find that WinMX and WinAmp runs best using WINE version 1.5, POL can help you set up those apps to run in that environment while still running WINE 1.7 for whatever other apps you wish to use. POL lets you have several versions of WINE installed simultaneously and provides scripts to manage the installation and configuration of a variety of win software.

PS
Removing the local wine directory will of course delete any data stored by the various Windows applications installed there.

I uninstalled Wine 1.5 completely and reinstalled 1.7 [using Zypper] and then my programs. All seems to be OK now.
These are the only 2 programs [WinMX and Winamp 2.95][they are near and dear to my husband and he will not switch] that I need Wine for, all other programs are Linux type.
I will be looking into Play On Linux.

Thanks for the help.
