Windows XP ask for the drivers?...What now?..

Hi there,

I have an HP printer connected to my linux box and want to print to it from a windows XP machine. On the XP machine I can see my linux shares via SAMBA and the printers too. Then I double click to install that printer in windows, and now its asking for the drivers. Is this the way how it should work or should the XP be able to install a drivers for itself?.

Anybody had this problem?..What is the way to get around this?

Thanks

Probably the easiest way to fix this is download the windows drivers from HP

Printers for your HP printer should be available from HP’s website.
This doesn’t really relate to Linux much except that the printer is
hosted on a Linux box. Either way I think you’ll have the most luck
just getting the drivers from HP. An operating system’s job isn’t
usually to ship drivers to every product under the sun as there are new
ones every day made and no great way to push them to every box in the
world. It’s up to hardware vendors to create drivers and make them
available.

Good luck.

Windows comes with drivers for a few older printer models out of the
box, but if yours isn’t among those, it’ll ask for a driver. It doesn’t
matter whether the printer is connected directly to the Windows machine
or accessed via a server over the network.

The only difference is that if you have a server, you can deposit the
Windows printer driver there in such a way that Windows clients can
install it automatically over the network the first time they connect
to the printer. But that’s a bit of work, and only worth the effort if
you have many Windows PCs, or if you need the capability for unskilled
Windows users to connect to the printer without your help.
