Windows Vista 7 or Open suse

Which OS is the best Windows Vista 7 or Open suse
I think Open suse is the best because I HATE WINDOWS

I say Windows , best virus magnet in the world , and once you learn it you will be in a large group of 80% of the population that uses computers .
openSUSE is way to simple , you have to learn on something daunting like Windows first , then come to Linux .

ok, so you like Opensuse, but why do people have to put down other OS types in order to explain why they like Opensuse? A lot of very smart people use Windows.

I installed win 7 and openSUSE 11.2 on my daughter’s laptop and she prefers using openSUSE 11.2. It’s her independent choice.:)Use what works and you like on your system.

Win7 is decent, however it has some annoyances like the Vista’esque start menu which I replaced with classic shell, explorer has gone backwards with horrible address bar, lack of things like disk space usage in the status bar and the horrible copy/replace dialog etc. - luckily classic shell fixed those too.

Also there are some other issues such as constant disk access which required some tweaking such as disabling readyboost/superfetch completely - otherwise it would access my drives and it was driving me nuts.

UAC is still the same ass it was before.

Why when you go to a Ford Dealership and ask about a Chevrolet , why do they put down Chevrolet ?
I don’t know , gosh beats the heck out of me .
Some one once said “ask a silly question , and you will receive a silly answer” , pretty fitting here .
Now name your prize , the fish will swim , but concrete is fluid .

New notebook came with Win7 so it just worked, stability good so far, but haven’t used it much or updated it yet (maybe reason for good stability). Looks pretty slick, but win95 was my last MS os. Even so, some things didn’t feel quite right - now Chrysantine’s provided the words :). Mmm, “classic shell” – must try that bit of nostalgia, so hopefully a setting somewhere.

Noticed the “constant disk access” straight away, and that’s when I reached for the 11.2 livecd (well it accesses much less). Didn’t notice the ass, so at the risk of showing my ignorence what does UAC stand for here?

UAC - may mean ; User Account Control

pitiful state of affairs in winders.

Vista is probably the best game system you can buy, except for
PlayStation, Wii, Nintendo and everything else available…

but, if need a computer for anything real (you know, like a letter to
Santa) then openSUSE is better…

On my Laptop, Windows 7 and Vista are the best for the following reasons,

battery time if far better than any linux os
suspend/hibernate is reliable
system responsiveness is better

On my Desktop, i still dual boot between Windows 7 and Opensuse. I do spend more time in opensuse but have the occasional need for windows when playing a few games or updating sat navs / mobile phones.

Welcome to Classic Shell

I hate the new start menu and I liked the old hence I wanted it back.

It’s a problem for a lot of people and you can bet your tushy it’s gonna cause trouble in the long run especially for users of SSD drives because it constantly writes $Log to the drive and does all sorts of ludicrous useless drive accesses.

UAC is indeed User Access Control which even on the second lowest setting constantly complains. They went so overboard with the “let’s ask everything!” that’s it’s crippling usability - try copying something to C: \ for example then move it to C : \Program Files or better yet, try to replace something in Program Files - I think it asks you like 5 times and demands Admin privileges 2 times while doing it and this is on the second lowest notification level.

Thanks for the link. My wishful thinking that MS would provide a retrofit and simple setting of choice on W7. I like some features of the new menu, but style over substance isn’t one of them.

Not to mention laptop battery drain and the constant disk light strobing effect.

Silly, I should have got that one, having seen the “nanny” questions several times. Such as opening system tool type programs even when only viewing, not updating. Even “powerless” users could quickly get fed up with the level of fuss. :\

I think U.A.C so annoying. It is one of the many features of windows vista and 7 that I hate

Do you have any gaming related benchmarks between Windows Vista and 7? After switching to 7 from Vista on my Windows drive, everything just went smoother and the games got better perfomance. At least on my computer.

When it doesn’t come to games. I prefer OpenSUSE.

sorry, i didn’t intend to confuse you…i should have written:

Redmond makes probably the best game system you can buy, except for
PlayStation, Wii, Nintendo, Mac, and everything else available…

ps: i write from a machine with zero Redmond on board…all the game i
play run native in Linux (no WINE here either…except for that needed
to run Google Earth and IEs4Linux), broke the Redmond software
addiction and money-go-round in 1995.

i’m a gamer, so Win7 64bit on my desktop, but my netbook runs opensuse.

Ok, got your point

The only reason for me having windows still is that I want to be able to play games with not so good support in wine (also, I have an ATI card).

The sad reality is, that if you want to play games or simulators, you are going to need Windows.

I have many years of experience with gaming under Linux, and when push comes to shove, it’s just (sadly) a waste of time.

Sure there are several games; and some very good ones; that have native Linux clients, and mostly they work better and more stable than their Windows counterparts. However very few people can play the same old games for the rest of their lives, and I for one was sick of missing out on some really nice stuff just so that I could feel righteous. Life is too short.

Plus when things like glibc, libSDL, and the sound system move on (under Linux), you will find that more and more of your collection no longer functions. I have original Quake2 Linux CD, it’s a nice piece of nostalgia, but it takes an enormous effort to get it working on a modern Linux distro (not that I even want to play it anymore because it gives me headaches!).

Use Windows for games, and (as Palladium says), do any serious stuff with Linux and you have the best of both worlds.

Windows is actually quite good when you don’t use it online, you don’t need to worry about virus checkers or any of that nonsense. Of course I use it for online playing, but as long as you never run a browser or attempt “updates”, it’s great.

In fact, a Linux (opensuse) system that are currently the best Alandmp How comparison foiled Systems it is windows:shame:

WAIT a minute, are you telling me that gaming (anywhere) is not a
waste of time?
