If I have all my open windows minimised and then start a new application running, I often find that ALL the minimised windows are maximised at the same time as the new window opens. This isn’t serious, but it is irritating, particularly as I can’t find any settings to explain the behaviour or stop it happening.
Can anyone suggest what the cause is and how I cure it?

someone might could if someone knew what operating system and version
you use…as well as what desktop environment and version…
i’ll assume you use what i use and ask: do you have your windows
behavior set to automatically group similar windows? or, switch to
automatically grouped windows immediately? and your focus policy how is
that set?
what happens if you set all of those to default?

Apologies. That was a very poorly worded enquiry. Let me try again:
My system specs are as follows:
Linux 2.6.37.6-0.7-default i686
System: openSUSE 11.4 (i586)
KDE: 4.6.00 (4.6.0) “release 6”
The problem arises under a specific condition: If I have a number of windows open and minimise them all using the 'Show Desktop" icon, then open a new window, all of the minimised windows are restored as well. If I have the same windows open and minimise them all individually, using the minimise “-” icon on each window, then open a new window, all of the minimised windows remain minimised. The problem only occurs when I use the “Show Desktop” icon.
I have tried the suggestion of setting the windows behaviour back to defaults, but this has no effect on the problem.
Window focus policy is ‘Click to focus’. (Click raises open window).

i noticed that also, and it made sense to me because if i used 'Show
Desktop" to minimize everything because i wanted open a new application
(maybe from a link covered by the stuff now minimized) i wouldn’t want
the new thing open up where i couldn’t see it.
and if it did open up by itself, what happens the next time you click
'Show Desktop"? does the new app hide and all the other return, or what?
so, the way it works makes perfect sense to me…
i just checked and see no controls to set it to do otherwise, i guess
you could ask the KDE folks to give the the ability to be told to do as
you wish…but, . . .
