1st… Neither browses the network anymore. what gives? setting up a LAN is getting harder not easier. I have all firewalls OFF. When I search for a solution or tutorial, only about 1000 different solutions are presented.
Can someone provide a PROPER link specific to Opensuse 13.1 and and Windows 8.1? On how to share a network drive? Thanks. I have had this setup a few times already, on older versions, so I don’t know why this is getting more difficult…
Thanks again,
Mike
I’ll use 4.25" floppies to share data for the time being…
Ok I have it working. What a fiasco… And it still isnt set up properly. I think Linux is ok with firewall on… But Windows 8 will not let me access my linux box when windows firewall is turned on. I need to poke a hole somewhere… The funny thing is my linux box can access the windows box when windows firewall is turned on. Windows **** never ever surprises me.
Extra steps not listed in any documents…
For Linux → Windows Open Konqueror and use SMB://ip.address of windows box.
I created an extra user in windows that I can log into from linux credentials pop up. I could not log in using admisitrator account.
For Windows → Linux You need to create a network drive with address file://ip.address.of linux box.
good luck to everyone else having any issues.
OK. In Windows 8.1 Firewall Settings → Allow Apps → I just enabled “Private Routing and Remote Access”. Now it all works with firewalls on.
AFAIK nothing has changed much configuring network shares if you’re using Windows Vista and later.
With Linux nothing I can think of has changed particularly if it’s a network share client and not a server.
But, if you haven’t run into issues before you may not have been “introduced” to the nuts of bolts of how network sharing really works. “Wizards” and the like may work most of the time but don’t demand understanding… and this applies whether you’re configuring network shares manually on Windows or Linux.
Be aware that Network Shares has its own security model as a layer on top of the Server’s file system security.
Typically, Usernames accessed from a workgroup network are based only on the human readable name.
If you are using a name that existed before in Network Security(like LDAP or AD), then re-used names may not work immediately if you are using cached security tokens because in that case newly created names will map to different security tokens.
