A new installation of openSUSE 11.1 on an AMD desktop throws an error at boot: the sound card doesn’t respond so the system is reverting to “default.” This window doesn’t close, ever. After the screen blanks from inactivity, the text is gone but the grey window persists in the upper right corner and always is on top of other applications.
Hints on preventing this persistent window would be most welcome.
Try going in to the System Settings and defer the card.
I can’t remember the detail for 11.1
If it persists you could try a new .kde4 folder, but you loose all settings so far to the desktop. Only once you are updated, this problem may go away. I would even consider updating kde to the latest version.
Do you want to do that?
Hi Caf,
Wouldn’t mind updating KDE. I have KDE 4.1.3, the default with oS 11.1. But than, Yast says some KDE 3.5.10 elements are also installed. No other versions are visible in Yast. I see at kde.org that ver. 4.4.2 is released. Is there a repository for that or will it appear in openSuse/update some day?
Solved the problem of the persistent window for phonon, the audio player. The error message window appeared at boot and wouldn’t go away. I renamed the file /usr/share/kde4/apps/phonon/phonon.notifyrc (added .HIDE to the end).
If you solved your problem then perhaps you should leave it as it is. Updating kde can be tricky, especially in 11.1 which also has kde3
You should start thinking about updating the whole OS, or at least planning it. You would need to format your partitions, so you need to backup.
No rush 11.1 is good until December 2010
