Window display issues within KDE pls help.

Hi all,

I have recently upgraded to opensuse 11.4.
Now I’m not sure whether this is a feature or a bug on my system… but

When I have an application window open for example this Firefox, I am able to see the menu bar ie File Edit View etc, though I am unable to see the title bar which is normally on top of that which normally has the title as well as the maximize and minimize functions.

Some extra information which may assist in the diagnosis is that I have gdm as my login manager, which I am willing to change to a kde one if this helps.

I have also attempted to click the configure desktop icon and click application appearance icon. The Style function is set to (where it says main tool bar text within the fine tuning icon) - text beside icons.

I hope I have provided enough information. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you running Compiz? Cause it’s not functioning in 11.4 - no window decorations

revert back to kwin, in konsole “kwin --replace”, if that works in systemsettings change default window manager to kwin

you can search around in these fora to confirm or deny, but i believe
a previous issue on the missing title bar was a graphics driver problem…

so, if you have a graphics setup which offers a proprietary driver
(ATI and nVidia) i think you might get your title bar back by
changing drivers…

BUT that may be wrong, so i ask you do some research

i do not know if this problem is also linked to a driver issue…but, i
very much doubt it…i would suggest that it is always best to put
each problem in a new thread with a descriptive subject (i say that as
one who skims subject lines looking for areas i might be
helpful…had i seen something like “style ‘text beside icon’ not
working” i probably would not have looked in…

suggest you solve the missing title bar in this one, and then see if
that fixes the second problem, if not start a different thread for it…

Hi, the “kwin --replace” key worked in the terminal. I am uncertain how to change my default window manager to kwin.

is it in the etc/sysconfig editor, or have I overcomplicated it and there is an easier way?

systemsettings -> default applications -> window manager -> use the default

Note also the change does not happen until X is restarted. Logout log back in or reboot.
