Win7 SP1 BOOTMGR error

Hi

I was unable to install SP1 for win7 dual booting with Suse 12.1. I found a guide in these forums here http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/how-faq-forums/unreviewed-how-faq/454535-opensuse-dual-booting-windows-7-loading-service-pack-1-windows-7-a.html#post2293946 after reviewing the advice I discovered I had indeed installed grub to the MBR.

Like most Win7 users I don’t have a DVD it came installed. I found a guide here Fix MBR without Install Disk to repair without full win7 DVD.

Now I found that I had recovery options in a built in partition of my laptop. So I have loaded up the recovery tools and went to the command prompt and typed.

bootrec /FixMbr

the result I was advised was successful, I restarted, however now nothing boots I have an Error.

BOOTMGR is missing
Hit Ctrl + Alt + Del to restart

.

Okay so there is no grub in MBR now appears to be nothing there. What can I do?

I suggest you use the following guide to reinstall Grub here:

http://forums.opensuse.org/forums/english/get-technical-help-here/how-faq-forums/unreviewed-how-faq/429971-re-install-grub-quickly-parted-magic.html

Then, I suggest you use the same disk to mark the Windows Partition as active, reboot, select Windows from the Grub boot menu and then see if you can’t install the Windows Service Pack.

Thank You,

Should I be using parted magic with Grub or Grub2

Which actual windows partition is to be set active.

/dev/sda1 PQSERVICE
/dev/sda2 SYSTEM RESERVED
/dev/sda3 Acer

Use this Parted Magic
http://www.su2root.ukfsn.org/files/programs_zips/pmagic-4.5.iso
OR any SUSE live CD. They use Grub not grub2

You don’t need to mark windows active

Thank you very much. It is all working and I was able to install SP1 as well.

Good news .

W7-SP1 gives an error if the windows partition is not marked active. That’s
the initial problem.
