Will not boot; resume device /dev/sda1 not found ignoring

resume device /dev/sda1 not found ignoring
waiting for device /dev/root to apear … could not find /dev/root

I have looked to attempt to find a answer to this, i have not been able to. I looked here and i looked in Google, i am trying to figure out if this is a flaw in the partition or if it is a driver issue with The Dell Poweredge 1850, if anyone can help me with this, what would be great. thank you

I a bit more information could help. Is this right after installation? After an update, after some other action? In short, we do not even know if you were a happy user for monthes before you got this problem.

A missing resume device is not a problem. That /dev/sda1" is not found does raise questions.

That’s the bigger problem.

This suggests that something is missing from the “initrd”, or somehow the “initrd” was not used.

Are you using encryption (as in encrypted disk or encrypted partitions)?
Are you using RAID?

Is there anything else odd about your system that might be related?

If you installed from a USB, then try unplugging the USB for the reboot. You might later be prompted to plug it back in, which would be okay to do by that stage of booting.

This was a fresh install
It was on a poweredge 1850 raid1 set up
I would install, then reboot and this would come up, it would not go beyond this point.
It would goto the spash screen, but not beyond that.

Please let me know if there is any other information that would help.

I am am using a normal cd rom to boot. not externals

Okay, so this is likely a RAID issue. I’m not a RAID person. I’m hoping that someone with better experience with RAID will notice this thread and step in.

Installing on an existing RAID is broken in 12.3. As I understand the best you can do is

  1. install 12.2 then upgrade via net to 12.3
  2. stop hardware/Fake RAID clean disk then install with software RAID

hopefully 13.1 will correct this install problem

It would be interesting to try factory version now (13.1) and report if
this problem persists. Now is the time to do it, in a month it will be
too late.

Do you guys think if i switch from RAID to Normal SCSI it may resolve the issue? It dont have to be RAID, i just need to get this server running any other ideas to help get this server running is appreciated.

Also thank you for all the help I am new at this LINUX stuff and i like OPENSUSE on some of my desktops, but the server thing has a learning curve for me

Yes…best to do a full wipe of the drive to remove all traces

Or as suggested install 12.2 (it’s install works with RAID) then upgrade. Note installing can depend on the type of RAID ie hardware/software/fake(bios assisted) note alos most RAID that comes on mother broads is fake RAID and may require software drivers. this depends on the chip set

I tried installing v13.1 on a Dell PE2850 with a hardware RAID 1 SCSI array. No joy, I get the same “Could not find /dev/root” error when rebooting after the initial install.

Make sure you report in Bugzilla.

Thanks, robin_listas. Yeah, I looked around for a similar bug on Bugzilla and, not discovering one that didn’t involve a laptop or something else without a RAID array, I filed a new report under 853914.
