Hello all of you lovely nerds.
I was recently gifted a notebook with an AMD Ryzen 5 130 CPU, and as far as I understand it has an “AI NPU” built into it.
Will I be able to deploy a copy of Tumbleweed on it, or will I have big troubles?
Will the NPU be made available in some capacity and used or just “ignored” by the system?
Am I better off regifting the laptop?
Thanks.
How about booting a live image from it and see how that works? These CPU / NPU things are not new, but you could do a quick search for the laptop model and see. Others most likely have already tried
Thank you, I’ll try. I didn’t find enough info before posting, sorry if it bothered you. ![]()
Not at all.
Usually these days the CPU/APU/NPU is not the problem, my educated guess is that it will work fine, but knowing only the *PU doesn’t tell much …
Are you sure it has a NPU ? According to this link https://www.amd.com/en/products/processors/laptop/ryzen/100-series/amd-ryzen-5-130.html it is a Zen 3+ CPU. It has a GPU but no NPU Support. As far as i know there is no AMD Zen 3 CPU with onboard NPU.
Visiting the notebook support page there’s a separate Windows driver for the NPU and there’s the dreaded Copilot key on the keyboard.
I decided to swap the factory SSD with the Win setup inside (just in case I decide to give it away) and then go for a TW install and see what’s what.
Thanks.
With the quick research I just did, I agree with the above.
After I scanned thru the AMD 5 130 specs page (no mention of NPU), I did an additional 'Net search with:
“AMD Ryzen 5 130 CPU npu” (added the npu at end).
- a. It does not have a dedicated NPU (via two links).
- b. The Ryzen 5 130 is a renamed version of the Ryzen 5 7535U, based on Zen, so lacks an NPU.
So, all should be fine with TW ![]()
Great, thanks to all that offered support.
