WiFi setup of kNetworkManager shows no IPv4 gateway -- solved

Been frustrated for days with a Toshiba notebook (64-bit openSuse 13.1, KDE) not connecting WiFi properly. It lost the IPv4 gateway, failed to connect after entering root p/w, etc. Accidentally brushed the touch-sensitive button above the keyboard that turns the WiFi radio on and off, disabling WiFi. When I turned it back on the connection came up in a few seconds, with a gateway address and no need to enter a password. This process probably does much the same as a reboot, but much more quickly.
