Wifi connects, but constantly stops working

I read through this site and found a couple messages about my problem, but can’t figure out how to solve it.

I’m using a D-Link AirPlus DWL-G650 wireless network card on my IBM T-30 laptop. The OS is openSUSE 11.0.

I am able to connect to my home wireless network just fine, but the connection doesn’t usually last for more than a couple minutes. Sometimes, it will last as long as 15-20 minutes. It always re-connects just fine. I don’t have this problem using other devices on the network, and I didn’t have this problem with this hardware configuration before installing openSUSE

I’m used to using Windows (I’m just trying openSUSE because friends rave about it), and if I were on Windows and had this problem, I’d update the driver to see if that worked. Unfortunately, I have no idea of how to do that with openSUSE, and can’t figure out from reading on this forum. Heck, I can’t even find the command line.

I’d appreciate any help.

Try changing the channel on the router.Interference can cause drop-outs & this quite often helps

I get the same problem anything from once to several times a session and have speculated that it might be the neighbours’ microwave oven (yes they’re smack in the middle of the WIFI band at 2.45GHz!), but haven’t proved it yet. Even if they miss your channel, with all that power they can still deafen a receiver…

However I also think there is a strong liklihood it is a SW problem as my system was rock solid until I upgraded from 9.3 to 10.3.
(I’m using madwifi driver in a i686 environment)

NB - you can check the frequencies of other “audible” systems if you right click on the knetworkmanager icon and then hover the mouse over each of the networks it can hear. Note - it can sometimes hear several systems on the same frequency because the transmissions are in bursts, so they can share a frequency to a degree. Another problem is that one transmission occupies much more than one “channel”. There is a particularly clear table at 802.11b WiFi Frequency Channels

My main gripe - is there any way to automate the re-connect???
At the moment I HAVE to do it manually and its a d**** nuisance especially when the family are trying to use the PC.
