wifi compatibility, preparing to buy

I’m trying to find a pci-e x1 wireless card. I bought one on ebay but it got lost in its travels to USA from China.
But that got me thinking that I need to be sure about what I buy.
I had a D-Link DWL-G510 using ath5k but it seemed to be dropping packets or something because now that I’m using a cheap usb wifi, I’m getting better internet access. Its an Ralink RT5370 using rt2800usb. I also notice that this usb wifi adapter doesn’t work out of the box in Ubuntu. (yay opensuse)

So anyway. I was wondering if ANY wireless card maker will work, just as long as it has the supported chipset?
I was also wondering if anybody could recommend a specific pci-e x1 wifi card. Is one chipset better than the other. My laptop uses ath9k and I’m happy with it. Is Atheros a good chipset?
Thanks for your time and info.

I’ve already looked at the HCL and didn’t find it all that useful.sorry.

There are not many PCIe 1x devices made. The only ones I could find on E-bay are
made by Atheros. They are a good chipset.

thanks for your reply. I was between a couple. The one I bought is also from China but with standard shipping instead of economy.
It’s a no-name brand but the antennas are lenovo. (well that doesn’t matter much) Hopefully I have good luck with it. its description of its
chipset is misleading though. I don’t know if its AR9280 or AR5416, it says both. oh well. maybe I’m missing something.

The PCI ID will tell which driver to use, and the system will do it
automatically. The difference will be between ath5k and ath9k. Both should work.
