I’m hoping to acquire a new laptop this weekend - I have a LiveCD ready for testing! I really don’t like the widescreen format though. It’s like I have to get a 19" model if I want to have the screen real estate that I’m used to on my non-widescreen older 17" model.
I really wish that there was a choice of screen format. Does anyone make non-widescreen laptops anymore?

Define “real estate”? Many wide screen laptops come in WSXGA+ 1680x1050
or even WUXGA 1920x1200. Both of those resolutions are higher than what
you had on your 4x3 aspect display which probably maxed at 1280x1024.
There are some 4x3 laptops out there (quite a few actually)… if
don’t want the widescreen format.
I define real estate as being able to read more of a 8.5" by 11" document in a wysiwyg format. There’s a finite limit to resolution here since my eyes require a certain font size to be easily readable. My laptop is old enough that it maxed at 1024 by 768, but even my desktop LCD is set to only 1280 by 1024.
It seems to me that the widescreen format will effectively render a smaller amount of such documents visible on screen at once. Please correct me if I am misunderstanding something about how aspect ratio works.
Further, for the little gaming I do, the types of games I play tend to leave me wanting a more square screen rather than a further away from square rectangle.
I think my choices are going to be limited by what is available locally due to the laptop being payed for by my parents in exchange for the laminate floor install I’ve been doing for them. I will look into HP and Dell as firozehh recommends also.

In terms of hight, a wide screen (19:6, I assume) 19" is actually just over
a 15" in 4:3.

When you can - legally - sell a 15" as a 19" ? Are you crazy ?

Bad assumption. While the OP has a point, no need to make things
ludicrous.

Well… it’s more comparable to selling a 17" as a 19" in reality… but
only if need the SAME physical height. Many prefer a high resolution
wide screen so that they can put two full pages side by side on the
screen.
OP is more concerned about the pixel size (doesn’t want density).
My guess is that the OP likes 1280x1024. You can get WSXGA+ at
1680x1050 and I’d think that might come close (widescreen laptops
are usually a bit wider). But if you’re not going to use the
extra real estate width wise, there is no need. OP was pointing
out the lack of 4:3 aspect ration laptops… but there are still
some out there.
