I just did an aspire one netbook. I found 11.2 32bit non-PAE worked without problem. 11.2 32bitPAE worked a couple of boots then just crashed constantly. 11.2 64bit wouldn’t even try to install even though the netbook I was doing was supposed to support 64bit.
In answer to flavors of kernel, basically, as I understand it, the DVD download has a default specific kernel and you can upgrade the kernel to newer ones as they come out but I generally wait till the next release is mainstream unless I want to play at pre-release testing.
You only need PAE to access more than 3Gb of memory; so if you have less memory than that PAE is pointless.

Not sure… Aspire One refers to a PLETHORA of VERY different
computing platforms. Without the SPECIFIC model number, this
is a hard question to answer.

Agreed… it will be less funny with a specific model number.
