Why wins?

I have been reading the samba book a little and I found this

[global]

dns proxy = yes

This will cause nmbd to query for machine names using the server’s standard domain name service. You may wish to deactivate this option if you do not have a permanent connection to your DNS server. Despite this option, we recommend using a WINS server. If you don’t already have any WINS servers on your network, make one Samba machine a WINS server. Do not, however, make two Samba machines WINS servers (one primary and one backup) as they currently cannot exchange WINS databases.

why the samba team recommends the use of wins and not DNS like the Microsoft active directory servers?
(I am clear that samba can not act as an active directory server)

According to Microsoft wins is an old technology and they are avoiding its use in their server.

I was reading some about samba 4 and they will still use netbios server in that version.

Thanks

Easgs;

This question is best answered by someone from the Samba team. Have you
considered posting to the Samba List Serve?
https://lists.samba.org/mailman/ ]

Here is my two cents worth, but these comments are probably worth just what
you are paying.

  1. Samba3 emulates an NT environment, and with NT domains WINS was preferred
    over DNS.

  2. Small sites may not have the human resources for deploying DNS. WINS is
    much easier to setup.

  3. Samba4 is really just a sand box for developing Samba. Keep in mind that
until quite recently everything in Samba needed to be reverse engineered. As
Samba continues to evolve, WINS in Samba may well go the same way as LANMAN.
