Why Windows is a pain in the a**

Hi,

today I had to update for testing purpose a Windows XP original Version to use the IE7. Ok, so let’s go and launch vmware to boot it.

After launching the online update M$ told me that first of all I had to install the newest version of the update installer to use MS-update services. Ok, so let’s go. Preparing for download …

What? Why do you have to prepare for download? Why don’t you just download the files? Some minutes later the download begins. After that “Do you want to install?” Whatfor do you think I had downloaded the files? Just to fill up my disk? Sure I want to install it! So come on and do so.

Some minutes later the next stupid question. “Do you want to restart your computer now?” No, I don’t but I have to cause you are to stupid to just relaunch the service. So reboot it.

After the reboot the online update didn’t start again. How could I expect this? That’s Windows! So again launching the online update and waiting for the research of my computer. The result was, that I had to install the service pack 2. Why not service pack 3??? Ok, so install service pack 2 first. Preparing for download … That f***ing prepare takes longer than the download. What the hell the system has to prepare for???

After about 10 mins preparing the download and 1 min performing it (yeah, my line is fast) again the question: “Do you want to install the downloaded software?” YES!!! I WANT TO!!! My poor keyboard. And after the installation? “Do you want to reboot your computer now?” Why do you ask me that stupid question knowing that I have to reboot. Ok, another reboot.

No, I won’t reboot. First of all I will ask you another stupid question. “Do you want to activate automatic online update? We are so smart that we can automatically reboot your computer whilst you are working at your most important software project without asking you …” No, for sure I don’t want that crap.

So now the computer boots up. Next stupid remark: “Your computer is in danger cause you didn’t configure automatical update! Do you want to configure it now (recommended)?” What did I tell you one minute before? Do you remember? No you don’t? Ok, I tell you again: I DON’T WANT TO CONFIGURE THIS!!!

Launching the online update again and what did MS tell me? Now you can install the updates? No, that would be to easy. “You have to install the newest update installer to use that service. Do you want to …?” What? What did I do about one hour ago? Didn’t I install the newest updater? I’m sure I did. So your smart outdated update SP 2 downgraded the updater? Yes, it did. So again preparing for download and installing with all the stupid questions the newest updater. ARGH! And after it? Third reboot.

So launching the online update a third time and looking for my update. No, I still cannot do what I want to. “You have to install the service pack 3.” So I was right. The newest SP is #3. Ok, do so. You are so boring. I will go for lunch meanwhile. Coming back from lunch the update wasn’t ready. “Do you want to install …?” F***, I forgot this. And after a while reboot #4.

So now I may update to IE7? Would you be so kind? Ok, launching the online update again and let them search my installation. First recommended update a MS tool to fight against malware. No, I don’t want those ppl to fight against malware. I know them for 20 years now and for that I also know that they can’t. Why trusting the only company in the world which sold an anti virus program that has never been updated? So I unmarked it.

After two hours finally the IE7 installation began. Puh! I got it. And what did he tell me? “You have to download the newest updates for IE7 and install our smart tool to fight the malware.” What did I tell you five mins ago? I DON’T WANT YOUR TOOL! “But you have to!” Ok, do so. You won. And after a while: reboot #5. No, I won’t ask now why I have to reboot just because I installed a new browser.

So now I could launch my IE7. First page:

Thank you for using IE7!

Thanks to mozilla project that I don’t have to. And I hate you for that that I have to test my web sites with it only cause you will never understand to handle CSS in a correct way. And I hate you even more cause you change the way you understand it with every version of your virus distributor named IE.

Do you want to join our project to make windows more user friendly?

No, I made my computers much more user friendly. I installed Linux a long time ago. Leave me alone!

Bye

Erik

No, I made my computers much more user friendly. I installed Linux a long time ago. Leave me alone!

That is brilliant, that is so true but, the last line, above, says it all. I used to run Vista 64 bit, never again!

Most people eat to live. But, some people live to eat!!
There is no doubt that Micro$oft belongs to the latter category.

You can actually use a 3rd party updater such as the old Neowin autopatcher (and it’s replacement) and get the system “up to date” during a single reboot then proceed to install other software such as Internet Explorer 7.

Or then simply make your own installation media with all the patches and service packs easily with the slipstreamer.

rotfl!
tks erikro …

i can’t stop laughing, i guess it’s because last week i pass for the same situation just to see how my pages behave on IE7.

Hi,

I know all this. I’m even administrating and teaching windows client and server systems. That’s why I say that Linux is much more user friendly and much easier to install and to maintain. Especially for testing purpose. A few days ago one asked me something about Ubuntu. So I installed it quick and dirty in a vm, updated it and used it. All within the same time I spent on that Update. That’s what I want when I have to test software and not spending my time on stupid questions and stupid reboots or even building my own slipstream CD. That only makes sense if you have to install a lot of machines or you want to maintain the system for several years.

oh no…there was a guy around here not too long ago who (it seemed
like) made it his job to find ALL non-glowing remarks about M$ and wag
his tongue at us for not being nice to Redmond…

hopefully he won’t find your post and hit you over the head…

who knows, perhaps he got tired and went back to his nose-ring OS…

we can hope!

I think comparing XP vs Linux you just rolled out from a pack is a little unfair though - you could grab a Linux distribution from 2001 and try getting that up to date enough to run most of todays software without issues.

Vista vs Linux would be a more apt comparison.

so true…hahaha…this made me laugh.

at a guess I would say you would mean me, who got completely bored of the constant attacks on anything, windows, other distro’s and other desktop environments by people who did not have a clue what they were talking about, and were just anti everything for the sake of it.

> at a guess I would say you would mean me

if the shoe fits, wear it…if not, leave it alone.

Hi,

Sure it is unfair. It is not my fault that MS doesn’t distribute a new version every one or two years. The actual version in business still is XP/2003. Noone who has basic computer skills wants to use Vista. So I have to use that old version. Another one I don’t have. I would download a newer one but I may not. I have to pay for it.

Ok, let’s talk about Vista. That is not only a pain in the a**. That pain you feel up to your throat. Just one example. Just two month ago I installed Suse on a friends laptop cause he complained about that network connections are so slow. Vista was installed. Since he had a lot of data on its laptop like videos, fotos, music I first backed up the user data to my server. That was about 17 gig. My network is 100 Mbit cabled. I connected Vista to my Samba server and put the files on it. Average upload speed: 989 KB/s. ARGH! So the upload on my server took about 5 hours. I guess 4 for preparing the upload. That drove me cracy since I had to wait that time to do my work. I was even in doubt that something was wrong with my network/server.

After installing Suse I put the files back on the laptop using the same network and the same Samba server. In both cases I had no other traffic on the network without fetching emails every 5 mins. Average speed: 6.5 MB/s. It was done in about 45 mins. So with Vista it took nearly 7 times longer. Unfair to compare this? Sure, you can do a lot of things to speed up the network under Vista but why do I have to do so? Why doesn’t it work fine out of the box? Why do they waste my time and my customers money?

Hi,

I support this. I also dislike ppl who are whining without any knowledge but I’m not that kind of guy. BTW: Suse 11.1 is also a pain. :frowning:

“Did” 2 identical Acer laptops a couple of weeks ago, 1 opensuse 11.0 with KDE3 completely updated to 3.5.10, 1 XP SP2 with lots of trial software from hidden partition. openSUSE was done incl. multimedia+NVidia in an hour. XP incl. update to SP3 took 2,5 hours, another hour to get wireless working (download driver from manufacturor) and 1,5 hours to remove all trial-ware etc.

Hi,

Don’t forget the hours you need to set up office and all the other software you need to work with. Last but not least all the hours you need to earn the money to pay all this.

Bye

Both Linux and Windows installs are about 20-30 minutes for me. I
employ the use of Acronis true image to make things much easier.

Hi,

If you have to set it up on the same hw with the same settings the use of images is a nice thing. I have to set it up on different hw or different settings.

My xp media center updates when I switch off the system at night, in the am set to go. Also windows runs special design software not in linux, mac. Do not run Vista, may not use W7,XP may not update and software may not update…that will be a problem…:sarcastic:
