why switch to Packman Versions???

I’m new to openSUSE and currently using SUSE 12.1…
I’ve used fedora before,
when it came to restricted formats, fedora uses the rpm fusion repository and suse uses packman repositories
but in the case of fedora there’s no switching vendors.
I’m just curious and want to know, why do we have to switch to packman version in suse?
is there any specific purpose?

just curious…

Thank you…

The ‘switch vendor’ bit is to tell your system to give preference to the rpm’s from the packman repo rather than the opensuse repo. For example both will include a rpm for (say) audacity but due to the licensing reasons the opensuse version will have restricted and the rpm from packman will not. In this example the ‘switch vendor’ bit will tell your system to install the packman version of audacity even if the opensuse version is already installed on your system. Without switching vendor your system will ignore the packman version of audacity as it will already be installed (from the opensuse rpm).

Hope this makes some sense!

thank you so much.
and it was really helpful.
so while updating, the system looks not for the update from opensuse repoitory, but looks at packman
so what if the packman repository has an older version of the same program in opensuse repository?

actually, when i tried updating today, it gave me a dependency error.
so i tried it over and over again and it gives the same dependency error, so judging by what you say, and what i experience, this should get fixed if they fix the new version in the packman
repository right??
so does anyone else get the same problem or is it just me??

was it a particular programme that you were after?

That is why the package manager allows you to ‘switch system packages’. This prevents ‘newer’ (numeric) versions from other repos replacing the packman version.

Actually no…
no particular programmme,
when i update, i get this msg

->The following package updates will NOT be installed:
-> gstreamer-0_10-fluendo-mp3 k3b k3b-lang kaffeine mobile-broadband-provider-info

so i was just wondering if that could be rectified.

you are right :shame:
 thank you for clearing it out for me

You’re welcome
