Why so many problems burning CD or DVD??

Please post said information that hplip is broken because of US law.

hplip works fine for me and my hp all in device and has for several years now, works just peachy using either the hplip shipped with opensuse, hplip from HP, or hplip from packman.

I am serious please show me the info about US law that breaks hplip. rotfl!

Many printers just work out of the box with the PCL3/PCL4/PCL5/PCL6 drivers contained in the foomatic-filters package (which are then offered via the CUPS webinterface). It’s always amazing how PPDs are truly redundant. Every compared them? Just a fecking name change inside the file, that’s all. Needing hplip must be a rare event.

I just use k3b yesterday and burn fedora livecd no problem at all,so I`m the one of few have no problem to burn CD and a no brand name cd no problem.
Where can I find coasters today?

I just installed 11.3 and did an update of k3b but it says cdrecord is missing and I need to install cdrtools package. Of course, that’s all installed - unless there’s some special version that’s buried in a repo somewhere.
**Unable to find cdrecord executable
**K3b uses cdrecord to actually write CDs.
Solution: Install the cdrtools package which contains cdrecord.

Additionally, I have found that I can run as root, which indicates some kind of a protection problem, but I haven’t been able to see what the problem is. I have made sure that I am in the cdrom group. I really don’t like doing operations as root when they should be done as a regular user.

And right after posting my information, I found a way to fix it. (Isn’t that the way it always is :X ). I checked the settings for my default version with the root version, and found that under Programs->Programs (tab) the settings for cdrecord and and mkisofs were not set. I set them for the /usr/bin/<program> settings, and now am burning CD’s again.

I’m getting “probable buffer overrun, try a lower burning speed” or something along that lines now. Before, it was that errors might happen with “high quality media” (I’m using tdk DVD+RW, 4x.). I still could not use not one DVD in opensuse 11.3. :frowning:

@op: You complain about “why-so-many-problems-burning-cd-dvd”, but I do not see any description of what does not work for you.

Let me put it blunt and short: It works for me, from the command line, using proper comand line arguments (e.g. setting the right buffer size). Are we using the same distribution?

  • openSUSE comes with cdrkit/wodim
  • home:hennichodernich (why it isn’t published in Base:System would be a good question) has the latest cdrtools/cdrecord
  • X11:xfce has the latest libburnia/cdrskin (complete new codebase)

I can’t believe none of them works for you.
And the funny thing… three pages of comments in this thread that has more than a year and nobody though about requesting an update from cdrkit 1.1.9 to 1.1.10? We are nearly a year late with this update!! Perhaps that would solve some of the problems…

I have never had any problems burning CD’s and DVD’s in openSUSE

Although I am still on 11.2, I have no problems burning cd/dvd/dl-dvd and
don’t have cdrkit installed. Wodim is wodim-1.1.9-3.2.x86_64
The only cdrkit packages I see available in 11.[2-3] are merely
packaged symlinks for compatability.

And wodim-1.1.10-2.1…rpm is available:

wodim is a program from the cdrkit project, as cdrecord is a program from the cdrtools project.

Yes, it’s available because after seeing this I updated it.

$ rpm -qp --changelog 'http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/htraki/openSUSE_11.3/x86_64/wodim-1.1.10-2.1.x86_64.rpm' | head -n 13
* mar sep 28 2010 **reddwarf**@opensuse.org
- updated to 1.1.10:
  * genisoimage: add support for sha256 and sha512 checksum generation
    when making jigdo files.
  * genisoimage: checksumming with lots of algorithms can be very
time-consuming, so split it out into multiple threads if possible.
  * genisoimage: allow user to specify which checksum algorithms to run
    on the command line.
  * Fix FTBFS with missing xconfig.h. Thanks to Matt Kraai for the patch.
  * genisoimage: fix string overflow breakage when using the -root
    option (https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=508449)
  * librols: remove or rename several functions that clash with POSIX.
    Fix up callers.

But I would have more time to fix things if I didn’t need to search through the forums for the problems. I would appreciate if people used https://bugzilla.novell.com/ more.

Agreed, but no reason for me to file a bug against a working system :^)

thanks for your contribution.

I recently upgraded to 11.3 and soon later to KDE 4.5.1, using the SuSE45 repo.

More recently, I tried starting k3b and received the
Unable to find cdrecord executable error message.
the rpm for cdrtools is installed, my k3b is the Pacman 2.0.1-1 version.

Hacking about, I found that removing the file (by renamed it)

/home/carl/.kde4/share/config/k3brc

then restarting k3b eliminated the error.
It appears that a new …/k3brc file was created.

I was able to burn a CDR (short test), so that functionality is apparently working.

However, when running k3b, choosing “Settings/Configure k3b” crashes the application.
I have been unable to find any error messages resulting from the crash.

Any ideas on cause of crash?

cmcgrath5035: the situation is very much the same with me, with the slight difference that I am on kde 4.5.2 (I hadn’t burnt any dvds-cd on OS recently so I couldnt tell about before upgrading to the latest kde). It recognizes the media in my two burners as empty media but when I try to burn a project into them it will just ask me to insert a suitable media. When I try to check k3bs configuration it will crash painfully (and systematically) and deleting the k3brc file in my home directory tree (.kde4 …) doesn’t make a diff at all.

rpm -qi k3b k3b-codecs

Ok I must state before that k3b was working good (well 99% of the times it failed to verify a just burnt cd/dvd but that happened to me with most distros I’ve used through time excepting maybe Sabayon, which is nowadays my 2nd distro after OS) and I didnt make any change. Problems started after some upgrade which I couldn’t be precise about. I should also repeat that k3b “sees” the media and will report them correctly if you select it then use the menu item Media Info but will defo not recognize them in the Burn dialog box.
