Why Opensuse is so underestimated? (or is only my opinion)

I think that Opensuse is one of the best linux distribution. And have a great community
But I think it is underestimated if I look on Distrowatch and Reddit (and various comments).
I saw a top on Linux Journal and I am glad that Opensuse occupied 2nd place. But I see a comment about Opensuse that made me wonder - “I thought it’s dead”.
Why Opensuse does not have the appreciation it deserved?

I think the key answer is so much of this is subjective.

Distrowatch and Redit appeal to a certain group of users, so any poll they produce, and any comments that appear on their feedback areas, are subject to the bias of the specific group of people who visit those forums/sites.

Most people who I have encountered in life who use GNU/Linux, who comment on and often quote using Distro-watch as a source, also in the majority of cases are distro hoppers, and as such don’t stick with any GNU/Linux for any point of time. That suggests to me that Distro-watch statistics is biased.

I long since stopped looking at any popularity statistics, but rather try to both use a GNU/Linux and contribute to a GNU/Linux that I am familiar with, which is openSUSE. I encourage all else to do the same. If one likes Red Hat / Fedora / Cent OS, or Ubuntu / Debian or other distribution, then I wish them the best and hope that they support in their distribution submitting upstream any useful fixes/update/features - so that all GNU/Linux distros benefit.

I’ve never been a believer in this vs that Distribution them-or-us debates that seem to take place at times. Each distribution has its good and bad - and lets all learn from each other and support each other.

But the bottom line, is so much of any and all statistics and viewpoints is incredibly subjective.

Thank you for the answer.
I think that is a good point of view.
I will try to stick with TW (and if I able to, to support it).

Distrowatch, at least, is not a measure of a distributions popularity.

From the distrowatch “Page Hit Ranking” page (https://distrowatch.com/
dwres.php?resource=popularity ):

“The DistroWatch Page Hit Ranking statistics are a light-hearted way of
measuring the popularity of Linux distributions and other free operating
systems among the visitors of this website. They correlate neither to
usage nor to quality and should not be used to measure the market share
of distributions. They simply show the number of times a distribution
page on DistroWatch.com was accessed each day, nothing more.”

I am agree that this polls are not measure of distribution popularity.
But that comment about Opensuse on Linux Journal : “I thought it’s dead” … Makes me angry.>:(

It’s not even a poll. It’s a page hit counter. Want to raise openSUSE’s
“ranking”? Set the openSUSE distrowatch page as your browser’s homepage.

But the polls aren’t even a really good measure - it’s an industry trend,
though - “most popular <whatever>” - everyone go vote, use your phone,
use your laptop, use these tricks to get two votes counted instead of one!

It’s a ridiculous trend.

Well, there are seven billion people on the world, and social media and
the internet have amplified everyone’s voices. Someone who hasn’t been
paying attention said “I thought it was dead”. Doesn’t bother me at all

  • as I can’t help someone’s lack of interest.

I am agree with you.
I was talking about Linux Journal’s poll not Distrowatch. There was that comment.
And “Makes me angry” was a figures of speech. Like you said, doesn’t bother me.
In fact, what I want to say is that Opensuse is a great distro. And I think that many people (that use Linux) are not aware of this.
Thank you very much.

Perhaps if that poll comment explained more about why he thought openSUSE was dead would have been useful… It might have been little more than that he didn’t read much and the community around him used other distros.

As for the Distrowatch “popularity” poll,
It seems it’s about as valid as the “Like” button in social media measuring something like news events.

TSU

Money talks.

Anyone who believes that, open source software can be maintained without suitable funding is, IMHO, not really aware of what’s really going on.

If you wish to really know which open source distributions are ‘popular’, investigate who’s funding them and then, go hunting for the ‘usage’ statistics (sadly, also not very reliable … ).

I am agree with you but only 90%.
Some distributions have companies behind who support them.
But some have not. Or maybe I am not aware of it. Like Archlinux. Don’t get me wrong, I think that Archlinux is one of the best distribution. And it is a distribution without a company who support it.

Why-Opensuse-is-so-underestimated-(or-is-only-my-opinion)

I am very indifferent to those who esteem and who does not esteem Opensuse, use Opensuse without thinking that it is my wife, tomorrow maybe change … it has no weight, the important thing is that I can do what I want inside and outside the internet .
