Why no auto login despite allowing cookies?

I have allowed to set cookies for opensuse.org and attachmategroup.com web site.

But I still need to log in manually each time I visit opensuse.org.

I do not delete cookies when closing Firefox.

What is wrong there? Or where is my mistake?

Yes. It is intentionally so.

Nothing is wrong, this is by design. We use the same login system that’s
used by SUSE, Novell, NetIQ, and Attachmate, and the credentials protect
access not just to forums, but also product license information.

There are many, many threads here and in the comments/suggestions form
that explain this.

Managed to lose my HD and had to reinstal software and Mozilla Firefox all of a sudden complains I am not allowing Glenn’s cookies in and therefore cannot log in. Checked and found I am allowing cookies and also third-party cookies anyway and to stop this nonsense have allowed Glenn’s site to drop cookies by entering his site especially. Still no login!

Despite all this I have now managed to get into this forum via IE after Glenn suggested I should try it. Phew! Life without the backshed is like a kiss without a moustache, there is something essentially missing and my life is not complete.

I suppose I should not have pestered this forum for help as I can access Mozilla and look at their site before asking them a specific question. I realised this while typing.

Ok. I do not have license information to protect on my PC. So why not let the user chose how to handle persisttent login?

Just remember, its for youre own good and use those muscles to click the Login button

Not the information on your PC. The information on Novell servers.

Because we use a single login system that crosses these different systems

  • and we’re not going to implement a secondary system.

Logging in isn’t that difficult - we leave the cookie active for 8 hours
of inactivity, so as long as you don’t clear your cookies when you close
your browser, in theory you should be fine.

As I mentioned, this has been asked many, many times in the past and our
answer has not changed. We do understand that some people see logging in
as an inconvenience - but it’s part of what we require.

You also use this login to access bugzilla and other openSUSE-related
systems, so security is a bit more important than if it were just a
forum. Because we treat security seriously here, we have not had
passwords compromised even when a known exploit was used against the
forum software.

Which makes us inclined to keep doing things the way we’re doing them.
