When I am using Real Player to play streaming video on Opensuse 11 it’s streaming rate is much slower than when I use Windows Media Player/Real Player on Windoze. I get 468kbs on Windows and less than half that on Suse. Also, it eventually freezes and won’t play the stream at all. I have tried buffering the video clip and increasing the amount of memory available, and fiddled with the connection type (T1/LAN etc.) but it makes no difference.
I don’t have anything special… I un-installed Beagle, I don’t use Compiz because when I turn it on the screen goes grey - permanently. Possibly ssh through Eclipse… not sure, not running postfix, at least not intentionally anyway unless it’s turned on by default.
I am using an ATI graphics card and I am loathe to start rooting with it. I have seen all sorts of horror stories posted here. It worked out of the box, and I am connected to the ATI repository for updates. None have come down so far. The graphics seem fine.

i don’t know if you will have better luck (more speed) if you use one
of the other players…i don’t wanna start a war but, i personally
prefer MPlayer…there ARE several besides the RealPlayer you are
using…(in addition to MPlayer i have Kafeine, Totem and VLC
installed and there are, i think, others)…
I too am having these problems with real player on lower end machines. Even with regular videos, eventually the video will stop and the sound will just keep playing in the background. I’ve actually given up on it and just switched the mplayer and the smplayer Qt4 frontend. Plays real media much better.
