I have to say goodbye to OpenSuse and Ubuntu. I was a ubuntu user for about a year and a half and then OpenSuse for a few months. I gave it all I could. With Ubuntu, the deal breaker was the complete lack of functioning with power management. I spent months configuring FireFox to work with video and audio files and numerous tweaks. With OpenSuse, it is the unbearably slow internet, general lack of video and audio functionality that just caused me to throw in the towel. A link was provided for me to try numerous network connection fixes but I have to ask why is this even necessary?
I have over 13 years supporting technology and even more as a user. I was there from the beginning and have experienced DOS, DR-DOS, every version of Windows (even Windows-286), OS/2, NeXT, and Linux. I simply am tired of searching forum boards for advice on how to make Flash, Audio, and Video play acceptably. Sorry guys, even with my disdain for MS I have to go back. I have work to do and tinkering with an operating system is not being productive. This computer came with XP so I will go back to that version. I really wanted this to work… Sorry.
Sorry to hear about your choice acrumbacker, but each person has to make their own way. I might suggest you use a dual boot computer, so that as time permits, you can go back to Linux, and try a few more things. The basic problem is that not all PC’s want to play nice with Linux and further, it can take a little more effort to get multimedia to work than perhaps you were willing to spend.
I can attest that I spent months working with Linux, loading and reloading, trying many Linux distro’s and so forth until I got my first system/setup to work, many moons ago. That was on an old Dell Laptop close to five years ago. I was working out of town, did not have much to do at night and I was desperately trying to figure out how to boot SuSELinux version 10 from an external USB hard drive connected to my Dell laptop. I had to reload Windows XP from a backup many times, but finally, it worked. I was so happy, I let out a very loud yelp. Then, I went out and got a few beers to drink, on a week night (but I was working out of town).
Since then, it has been one new discovery after another. And, its not all about what I can do. Its about helping others as well. What I found out was that helping others with their Linux issues, helps you out as well. It expands your horizon, your capabilities and your thoughts.
So, if you decide to give Linux another try, please come back and let us try to help you one more time. You don’t have to do it alone as long as you have an internet connection working, even if it is working in Windows. That is what I have done and I am not to proud to use Windows to help me use Linux when I need to.
If you were having problems with these things, why didn’t you inquire on these forums? I see you have one previous post regarding Tasque, but the problems you refer to here are common and there are usually easy solutions.
I get it! Your a real ‘guy/gal’ which is I guess why you pop in to say goodbye without asking for help and advice. I post asking for help with tasque ( a reasonably obsure peice of software ) and a goodbye ‘openSUSE and Ubuntu won’t play nice’ would clearly seem to sell all the help members here provide on daily basis quite short.

Power management on a laptop is a sore point even for windose. Many a time I have had power management screw up in windows and dump hours of production. There are fixes in most cases. In general Ask politely and ye shall recieve.

Let’s not go down the experience path Ok cause you won’t like my responces. Let’s sufice it to say, a professional in need of help, outlines what their system has (make model OS’s & configuration), what desktops (gnome/kde/other installed/used), and posts requests to the right forum sections (one problem per post) and in the case of the 45000 strong openSUSE community I am sure we can find resolves to your problems. Point is you joined in June posted 1 obscure message about an obscure app and no supporting info about what you have for a system so most would just bypass your question rather than trying to drag it out of you. Help us out here! You say you worked years supporting technology, is that just buying the lastest and greatest or helping others with technology hang-ups. If the later, would you be more eager to help someone who says ‘my machine came on yesturday and I can’t connect to the Internet’ or someone who says ‘this **** thing is broken’

Do what you must, you are still welcome here when you deside your time is more valuable than the pride in not asking for help. Good Luck.
If you wish to keep trying openSUSE Linux, just post on our forum with the details of your problem and ask for help, and I am sure you will get various volunteers willing to give up their time to help you.
As for the ‘dark side’, my wife and most of my friends would disagree with you. They believe winXP (and some windows 7) are great products, and I would not dream of convincing them other wise. My view is go with what works, and they definitely find winXP/win7 works for them. They ARE smart people.

you don’t need to apologize to give up and go back to an old,
overpriced, consumer locked-in, virus magnet which MS itself tried to
kill when they brought out Vista, but couldn’t…
it is your choice, and i respect the fact that your choice is as
sound as what you choose…
if you again feel the need to venture out, drop by again we will be
happy to try to help you–but you must either use a search engine to
find the answers you need, or ask…
I consider anyone who never ask for help or solution at 1st post, a troll…
No one can be helpful if one have come just to say how bad something is. Actually, by replying to this is just giving more food… I am stopping.
Just remember that millions and millions of people are USING Linux distros and a
lot of them use it as their primary OS if not their ONLY OS.
So… while I understand that you had problems getting a workable environment,
it has not been a problem for many out there.
With that said, if you are comfortable using Windows XP (or Windows whatever or
OSX, etc), then you have your workable environment.
IMHO, most serious problems can be fixed via direct troubleshooting with experts
found at your local LUG.
I’ve been using Linux distros (SuSE, SUSE Prof. and openSUSE) fulltime as a
desktop environment since 1994. I could not be happier.
PLEASE leverage your local LUG when you are having any issues. Forums are
great, but sometimes live troubleshooting is the best way to find the root cause
of a problem. With that said, in general, the Linux community is a VERY honest
and trustworthy community and so even setting up remote troubleshooting across
the Internet would probably work… and even if paranoid, you could simply watch
and learn and redo the machine from scratch if you feel the community help is
not fully trustworthy.

Not a problem. To each his own.
Amazingly, I happily use Win7 for gaming and Netflix, (too cheap to buy
an xbox or ps3).
BTW, WinXP took 2 Service Packs to get it right, Win7 needs a SP1 and
lots of tweaks for the Windows Live features.
Windows is also great for 3rd party vendors like Symantec (Ghost,
Internet Security), MS SQL Server 2003, Adobe CS4 while OpenSuse,
LinuxMint 9 provide similar features for free and/or download.
‘Dark side’ would be saying a bit too much … to tell the truth Windows XP was good and compatible with nearly all Windows software (but unsafe and virus-prone), Vista was horrible and Windows 7 played fine from what I’ve seen, but no in-depth testing.
Still, it’s your choice. You should use what works for you. Linux doesn’t play well with all hardware, and that part of Linux is still under constant development. If you want, you could drop back into Linux sometime later and see whether your problems have been fixed.
Lamenting about going to back to a familiar OS after spending less than 2 years on another OS (and 2 distros to boot)?!
Either you’re getting pulled into the anti-Microsoft kool-aid (born-again Linux user?), or are looking for something “new”, “shiny” and “sexy” but want it to work as easily as the “dark side” OS does in 1/6th the time.
I’ve been at it for 7 years and I’m only beginning to get a clue It took me 5 before I succeeded in my self-established goal of being able to replace Windows with Linux, but that doesn’t mean I don’t still have Windows around.
Heck, I use Ubuntu on the family desktop because it works (for me) and so I don’t have to tinker with the OS all of the time (former Gentoo user here). Before Linux was able to fulfill everything, then we dual-booted with Windows. It’s really taken until now to be at a point that I boot up Windows once-in-a-while just to run updates to keep it secure for those cases where I may need it (and don’t have hours to do the updates then).
Some people test the waters, some take the plunge. It all is up to what you need and what you have available.
