All of a sudden I’ve got this HPLIP icon in my system tray
Ok so it’s something to do with HP printers, but I never asked for it, I
don’t know what it is supposed to do and, even if I quit the damn thing it
just gets reinstated when I log in again.
RMB on the icon brings up a menu offering HP Device Manager … but
selecting that doesn’t do anything.
I don’t like having applications suddenly appear that I don’t know about -
smacks too much of Microshaft.
Do I need it (my [HP laserjet] printer isn’t connected to this machine) and,
if not, how do I get rid of it.
But the real question is why was it installed/activated in the first place
without any input from me?
If you have ever connected to an HP machine, it will have been installed - possibly because an earlier version (which had no systray icon) was installed with a previous version of openSUSE and openSUSE has kindly assumed you will need it again.
It’s actually the way into a range of HP device related software but is pointless if you are never going to be connected to an HP device.
click on it with RMB and select HP Device Manager. check whether any printers are on the list. if so, remove them. after that you should be able to turn it off and it shouldn’t reappear unless you turn it on. it helps in my case.

See the original post - the fact that nothing happens when I click on HP
Device Manager is one of the things that bugs me
If you open the HP Device Manager and go to Edit | Preferences there is a configuration tab called System Tray that allows you to hide the HP icon from the tray. If you don’t use HP printers by all means uninstall HPLIP, but for those of us like myself that do hiding the tray works well for me.

Ppl keep saying click on HP Device Manager in the HPLIP menu
I do but nothing happens - no windows open, no bells sound, no messages, da
nada!
