who is gona get a new computer in 2010?

I will spend in 2010 in vancouver a new laptop for $3000+
what about you.lol!

Good for you! (Welcome back, by the way.)

I don’t buy new computers like that, per se. If it’s time to upgrade my desktop PC, I’ll buy a new bare-bones and build it up myself. Mobo, case, power supply, hard drives, RAM – I buy components and build.

As for laptops? I’ve seen the future on that. My wife and I bought matching Blackberry Storms the other day, and that’s the only way to go for mobile computing. The Storm’s touchscreen is large enough that even my old eyes can see the Web browser. It does what I need when I’m on the road.

To specifically answer your question: I doubt I’ll get a new one this year, but I may treat myself to one for my birthday next January.

Why wait to 2009 ?

I hope sometime in the next two months to purchase a new PC, to augment my existing ancient athlon-1100 and athlon-2800.

I’m looking at an Intel Core i7 processor based motherboard (such as the X58 Platinum ATX X58 So1366 DDR3 motherboard, Zimmermann Electronic GmbH - X58 Platinum ATX X58 ) .

But I’m struggling right now to pick a graphic card for it. I’ll likely go back to nVidia, but I want a nVidia card that is no more than about 150 euros, where support for vdpau is a must. VDPAU - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I might even upgrade the graphics on my old athlon-2800 to a vdpau compatible graphic card, IF I can find one for significantly less than 100 euros.

If Apple releases a new Macbook Pro with matte display then yes - until then my ol’ trusty 2.4GHz will do.

Hmmm … ok, scrap that idea. My athlon-2800 does not have a PCI-express slot (only PCI and AGP-3.0). It turns out only a subset of graphic cards that work out of the PCI-express slot support vdpau. As near as I can determine, there are not AGP graphic cards that provide vdpau support.

Most likely will get a Macbook/Macbook Pro to replace my aging
Powerbook G4 and Thinkpad T43 at some point this year. Probably build a
desktop in late 2010 with the I7 chip.

If I get anything, it would be second hand most likely. Possibly a Netbook for myself (since my wife has taken over -er I mean adopted the laptop).

What would be cool would be to get an ultra-low voltage PC to set up as a Virtual Router/Firewall/Content Filter (1) and a file server (2) and web server (3) for the house since this is on all the time. Nothing ultra-powerful (currently using a 700MHz P3 (for #1) and 1.0 GHz P3 (for #2 and #3) so individual power is not a big requirement.

I’m hoping to upgrade the CPU on my rig to a Quad Core but other than that, no.

I was looking at a netbook but figured I would not have the time to use it. It is very tempting tho. My next purchase is a media player for my Tv. Then it’s back to saving for the next bit of kit. But to answer the questiong of the topic I to upgrade rather then buying a new computer.

I will get the new Macbook Pro. and wait little longer and get the New Suse I believe 12.0/13.0.
