Hello
I have tested both Ubuntu 9.10 and now Open Suse 11.2 on a computer with an Intel Integrated Graphics Card (82865G).
Now, “out of the box” Ubuntu 9.10 will give me a screen resolution of 800x600 - and it cannot be set any higher without workarounds.
In the new Open Suse 11.2 i get a resolution of 1280x1024. As far as I know the Intel driver is integrated in the kernel. Ubuntu is using kernel 2.6.31, and Open Suse is using kernel 2.6.31.5.
Is this the explanation for the difference in screen resolution? I mean, does the kernel used in Open Suse contain another version of the Intel driver?
Not sure about this. Maybe ‘modinfo intel’ will give you this info.
Do I just write “modinfo intel” in a terminal?
Think the answer is xorg. Ubuntu uses 7.5 and Opensuse 7.4. But that’s just a guess.
Seems loads of people have problems with a intel card and Ubuntu. More reasons to stay with Opensuse 11.2 , me thinks!
This article suggests xorg, kernel, and intel driver versions all impact on your experience with various intel graphics hardware.
Do I just write “modinfo intel” in a terminal?
Yes, and this command will give you your Xorg version:
X -version
Actually my intel card works fine in both 11.2 and Karmic, any issues I had with my intel card are gone in both 11.2 and Karmic.
But the OP’s issue might be monitor too, its hard to say.
You’re right. And I’ll stay with it:)
WOW. WHAT A RELEASE! My hardware just works! Open Suse even got my old NVidia FX 5200 128 mb agp card fired up! I just put it in, restarted my pc, and it worked…
I wish I had your luck!
At the moment I have a display on my laptop [i830 card]: but that’s only because I’m using the generic VESA driver after a long slog trying to set the graphics. The Intel drivers don’t seem to work at all here…
