Well, finally got openSUSE on my hard drive. Quite easy, went well. The system is beautifully done.
I went to install an Nvidia driver for my TI4800, and I had the choice of several drivers. I chose the first one, it works ok, but I have oddities in CompizFusion.
The top “handle” on my windows are missing when I enable the effects. The handles come back went I disable the effects.
Open Arena runs pretty well, but sound is out of sync with the graphics and graphics are a little sluggish. Not bad though.
Did I choose the wrong driver?
Troy
If you chose this driver, then you have chosen the right one.
Was it the one you chose?
I believe it’s a problem with xorg.conf settings
I don’t really remember the correct command but it’s something like argb something to put in xorg.conf also try to run compiz from a terminal and look at the messages what they say.
Right now things seem to be working better with Open Arena. I’m not out of sync, the graphics seem faster.
I received some updates last night, maybe that fixed that part?
I chose the first driver in the suppository.
I’m still losing the “handles” at the top of the windows when I enable the effects. I can’t grab them and move them.
Troy
That’s why I’m telling You to run compiz from a terminal and put the output on the forum. It should show what’s wrong with it.
I chose the first driver in the suppository.
rotfl!
I’m glad to see someone has a sense of humor around here.
Oh dear, I said “suppository.” Funny thing is I thought I was typing the right word. I got the last part of the word right.
troy@linux-jb3l:~/Desktop> compiz
compiz (core) - Error: Screen 0 on display “:0.0” already has a window manager; try using the --replace option to replace the current window manager.
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

openSUSE uses compiz default right? Is there another one that allows you to rotate cube and stuff like that?
A few other problems while I’m typing; Saurbraten doesn’t work. Open Arena didn’t create a short cut in my games. Some games just don’t work.
Troy
Well, I do have the right driver.
Search the wiki for the Compiz Fusion article; there is trouble-shooting suggested there. When you ran “compiz” from the terminal, you were trying to launch a second display session; that’s why you got the (unhelpful) message you did.
If you had the wrong driver, the gui would probably not work at all. To verify if the problem compiz, just disable it. If all works OK, you know its the compositor and probably its configuration. Again, check the howto.
Finally, I assume you are using Gnome. If you are using KDE 4, you should give kwin a try as an alternative to compiz.
