The 4.2GB DVD or one of the LiveCD’s? I am planning on running it via VMware on a Macbook Pro 5,1. I am looking for which will deliver best performance out of the box with VMware.

Take note of the kernel development packages required. You may need to install these after:
make
gcc
gcc-c++
kernel-source
Or perhaps just go to Yast Software Management - Filter by Patterns View
And scroll down to select: Base Development. But still make sure kernel-source is selected.
