which derivative should i install for old computer?
Moved from a locked section.
Details might be helpful…
Slitaz seems to have the buzz at the moment.
DSL Damm Small Linux
Puppy Linux
How old is old? Some specs please, particularly RAM and CPU. One person’s old computer is another person’s speedy machine.
Damm small, Slitaz, Puppy.
But like ken_yap pointed out you did not post specs…
So any distro might suit you.
DSL, if you can make the RAM requirement.
Puppy, only if it’s fairly old at least a i586.
Slackware, if i486 or later.
NetBSD almost guaranteed to work if it has RAM and a processor. lol!

sorry, but with only 192Mo ram, no openSUSE maintained version can run.
Use the other choice proposed by answers
I think you mean no “SusE GmbH maintained version can run” as opposed to no “openSUSE maintained version”.
I know of 2 openSUSE versions (maintained by volunteers in the openSUSE community) that WILL run will with 192MB of RAM. Specifically LXDE and SOAD’s Enlightenment implementation.
One can download liveCDs for them here.
I recommend a text install for such an older PC.
no, it’s not a typo. I don’t know of any “SusE GmbH maintained” version.

openSUSE official versions have an official life time. Is that the same for lxde? I would love it to be so :-)) I would even love a longer life time :-). Never heard of Enlightenment version, but this one was (very long time ago) for big computers
That said, I never could install (not for a long time now, that is) openSUSE with less than 256Mo ram. I will test asap your link, thanks
A bit offtopic but, what happens if you choose to have separate user and root password?
Does a new window asking to create a root password apear?
Hi
Yes, if you uncheck the box, the next question is the root users
password.

Thanks! Next time on 11.3, ill do a separate password config.
I took note of your question, and updated the “Text mode install from liveCD” guide](http://forums.opensuse.org/information-new-users/unreviewed-how-faq/436916-text-mode-install-livecd.html).
I can confirm the lxde live cd runs on 192Mo (at least with VirtualBox), very slow but runs. Including live!!
For install, graphic one works, but text mode is much faster. I’m very glad to see text mode install back!!
I had however a problem, I will summarize here (with the fix), just in case you don’t know.
After install (any way: grafical or text), I got a black screen for the first reboot.
Control Alt F1 (control F1 on VirtualBox) gives the first terminal, stopped after Hal load. Alt F2 gives a root terminal. There, “yast” starts the second yast install stage and after it all goes welll… as long as you uses english as langage. I couldn’t manage to load the fr keyboard (locale not found).
Hi
You can always set a root password?
sudo -i
passwd
