I have been a recording hobbyist for some time, and while I am perfectly content to play with simple audible content, and am relatively familiar with formats and techniques, it seems that lots of folks like to “see” things, too. Everybody wants me to work with video in addition to audio. Which is all fine and dandy, except that I am utterly unfamiliar with video on linux. By “video” I mean everything beyond basic dvd playing and watching YouTube movies. I don’t have a clue what things like “xvid/vidix”, “tdfx_vid”, “vdpau”, “vob”, “avi”, etc, actually mean.
So what I am looking for is a good introduction to video on linux. Or perhaps I am a bit off course and what I really need is a good intro to digital video in general. I honestly don’t know what I need; except that I would like to get a point where the mencoder manpage actually makes some sense to me. Currently I may as well be reading a good Chinese novel. *
Not to downplay the Chinese language; it was just the one that came to mind as a perfectly excellent form of communication with which I am not familiar to any degree…
If you have specific items where that approach does not work, and other keyword searches along that line don’t work, then simply ask on a specific item. Typically if you can NOT find it easily in google, it may no longer be the sort of question that inspires more experienced users to think one may be looking for a free ride at the expensive of others.
I spend a lot of time on google, learning about different things.
Ah, I guess I was trying to cheat, wasn’t I? I was just wondering if there was a single place where someone has tied all these together. I guess I have my reading for the weekend covered!
I find the more one uses google, the more one can quickly optimise or improve their search. For example you were curious about xvid and divx. They are both video codecs Maybe that means you are curious about other video codecs.
Some of us try to write guides on specific items, but not down to the basic level that you were asking. … For example some links to wiki’s that I started (some of which have taken off on their own):
But wiki like those will die without maintenance and contribution. Hence its clear to me the “openSUSE concepts wiki” will thrive without my input. The others will likely die eventually when my maintenance stops.
