I briefly installed OpenSuSe 11.3 64 bit on my Lenovo laptop last night only to find an app critical to me would not run with Crossover Linux Pro on 11.3, so I reverted back to 11.2
That isn’t a problem for me. What I could not find in 11.3 was SCPM. I use my laptop quite a bit and used scpm to set the nfs network up for each different site I logged into. I did not see how to do this with 11.3, but assume I looked in the wrong places. Anyone tell me how to do this with 11.3?
Have they added functionality to NetworkManager? In spite of its name, previous versions could only manage connections, not networks. Has that changed?
I used scpm to enable me to switch from an NIS enabled system to one w/o NIS. In that way I could VPN into work, use SUMF to switch to the NIS enabled profile, and then have full connectivity to my work environment with remote mounts, printers configured, etc.
SCPM also provides integration with the boot system so that I could designate the default protocol be used when starting the system. Without this should I forget and shutdown leaving the NIS in place then my next boot would be extremely painful. Long, long, (long!) timeouts waiting for the network between each and every operation.
Maybe NetworkManager provides a similar capability … but how? (Yeah I know how to enable it, but just as an aside note that for others this might be more difficult given that NM is not even enabled by default in a fixed workstation).
Thanks for the information. However, you give no explanation of how Network
Manager in 11.3 is different from that of Network Manager in 11.2 because in
11.2 it doesn’t do what SCPM does. Has Network Manager changed?
From what I could find, apparently the person maintaining that package is no longer part of the team, so there is currently an empty opening to maintain SCPM.
I have found a number of other forum postings on various sites from folks who are upset about SCPM being removed, but unfortunately, other than the kludge workaround, no one attempting to talk the OpenSuse folks into bringing it back. For those who find this feature useful, it is critical to let them know.
I did not see any previous openfate creation, so I created one, requesting SCPM be added back to 11.3, and kept in future releases. Please swing by and vote for it to be included:
